big bang: the end of the end

Mar 04, 2011 11:04

(note: this is my big bang for lost_land . It's a collection of images, writing, and songs, all centered around the last half or so of "The End" from Jack's point of view. To make things easier on the mods, there are 100 color caps in a picspam, 500 words of fic, a 7 song fanmix, and 20 icons. That should add up to the 100 points.)

It seems like the end. The climax, the end of everything, the accumulation of years and years and everything that’s happened. What his life has been leading up to, all this time, all that death and confusion. The island, Jacob. The light and his destiny. Breathing and bleeding, back and forth through time, in and out of his mind. For this moment, this single moment. Jack steps forward.

He swallows, and everything changes.

all of this can be broken
all of this can be broken
hold your devil by his spoke
and spin him to the ground

There’s a strange subtlety in power. A tiny thrum, throbbing, singing inside, even in the midst of fists and blood. Jack feels it and he breathes in the rain. The shaking ground and the gray and red, running and pounding and breaking. Oh, that power. It rushes, fast as the waves below, and Jack thinks this is it, this is it, this is it. This is what I stayed for.

That same feeling is in the kiss. It’s softer and sweeter and just that much stronger. The power of nostalgia, of wishing and wanting and waiting, waiting. Years and enough stories for a lifetime and more. The feeling he’s missed since he last tasted it. Those lips. Those lips and that power.

I can’t remember when the earth spun slowly
so I’ll just wait here till the lights go out again
I lost my place but I can’t stop this story
I’ll find my way but until then I’m only spinning

It’s almost a relief, giving it away.

Hero. The word is everywhere; the implications behind it. People used to call him that. “You’re a hero, thank you.” A heavy weight for such a small word, and Jack never felt it. They said it and he brushed it away. But now, now with the island’s power in his mind and blood on his hands, now with red light around him, the word vibrates through the rock. Through his veins and his bones. As he moves the stone and the ground stops shaking, he finally feels it. Hero, he thinks, and he smiles.

the splash and jangle of the secret signs
defined, you claimed some golden ages
a promise

impassable night in a crowd of homesick
fully grown children
you'll leave the lights
your family may not wait
 sir, keep on believing
our parents rue the day they find us kneeling
let them think what they may
for they've good reason
left for the lights
always in season

This pain. This pain is worse than any; it burns, consumes, flashes and flares and stings. For a second Jack thinks he won’t get up. There’s no way, no motion in his limbs, no will in his heart. His eyes are closed and he’s lying on rock, rock and cold red water, and he wants to give up. He’s done it; the ground is still, clear sky and no more smoke. The perfect time to let himself go.

you know that dying is fine, but maybe
I wouldn't like death if death were good
not even if death were good

But he gets to his feet.

and when you’re gone
will they say your name?
and when you’re gone
will they love you the same?
if not, that’s okay

People always said life comes full circle. Ashes to ashes and dust to dust. Out of the cradle and into the coffin, but Jack never imagined it quite like this. Lying on the ground and staring up at the sky, at trees and blue, and really this is where his life began. The moment they crashed, that first breath of the island’s air. He was born here, this bamboo forest. A plane passes overhead. Nobody dies alone, Jack. He hears his father’s voice in his head, words never spoken, but he knows they’re true. Jack smiles. He clasps his hands over the hole in his skin and he can’t feel the pain anymore.

When Jack closes his eyes, it doesn’t feel like dying. It feels like moving on.

angels will call on me now
 everywhere I go
angels will call on me
and take me to my home
and angel will fall on me
 everywhere I walk
angels will call on me
and take me to my home
and angels will call on me now
 everywhere I go
angels will follow me
now lead me to my home
