How Sony shot themselves in the foot

The PSP could have been a huge success if all the money poured into video playback and music capability had actually been usable.

Sony are the assholes who are all for DRM, so we can assume they're all for DVD's being encrypted.

However, because the PSP couldn't play back DVDs, they expected you to buy an entirely new format that only worked one platform.

Yes, that's inconvenient, several other people have said that.

My point is that, had DVD ripping been legal, Sony could have easily released a DVD to PSP program, that would have done away with the need for a separate format and still live up to the PSP's expectations as a media player.

However, getting video from DVD to PSP would involve breaking encryptions.
