According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Developement, the U.S. gave 6 to 9 billion in foreign aid between '95 and '99. Japan gave between 9 and 15 billion in the same time period. On the scale of gross domestic product (national WEALTH), the US ranks 22nd in the distribution of foreign aid out of the most developed nations. Denmark is the top, giving 1.01%, as opposed to the US's .1%. Jimmy Carter once stated " We are the stingiest nation of all."

Besides the US's national status of being the least generous developed nation, the US is also extremely selective when it comes to WHO and WHY we give aid... For example, the billions given to what we now know as "terrorist" organizations such as the Taliban. Over 50% of our foreign aid is given to middle income countries in the middle east.

Humorously enough, the US Agency for International Developement states that 'the principal beneficiary of Amerikas foreign assistance program has always been the United States.'

So, if indeed you are correct about the US being unusually generous and CNN is incorrect about Sweden giving more than the US, it would be extremely out of character given the US's past and (beleive it or not) present behavior in dealing with monetary aid.

There are many more than "four" countries donating to the cause... Including France, at about 80 million... and Britain who just tripled it's aid to 96 million.
