sometimes i really hate my dad
you'd think a person of color would be less likely to pick on others of color too, you know- communities bonding over a common oppressor and crap. well, that really doesn't work with my father. in fact, i think it's made him even MORE racist.
for just a few minutes ago, i was in the kitchen informing dad of an old childhood friend who just recently got hitched, it was somewhat matchmade by her parents and family but it was ultimately her choice-and i was very happy for her. she seems happy, so what's the problem? immediately my dad started going on about how she doesn't know how bad he really is and started implying he was probably a wifebeater and a terrorist.
where in god's green earth is the proof of that? seriously, my dad is smart-why in the fuck would go around sprouting ignorant, racist crap like that? especially my friend who my family knows and thinks fondly of? where is his justification to accuse some guy whom we've never met that he kills lots of people and beats women? the uprising in tehran during the 70's when they took over the u.s. embassy.....i'm not kidding-that was what he said!!
i told him how really offensive it was and that i didn't find it funny. he started laughing and trying to backtrack saying how he was just joking. yeah, dad-sure-like you haven't been making the same cracks at latinos, blacks, indians and filipinos these years. yeah, i'm not kidding-he married a filipina, nearly everyone in our family is married or born part filipino-doesn't quite make sense.
then started musing he needs to work on his indian accent, and that he needs to start hanging out with some indian dude at his office so he can improve and master it.
and i worry a bit as i write this down if my friends are going to wonder about that with me. they say the fortune cookie doesn't fall too far from the....fortune cookie bag? *shrugs*
i dunno, sometimes i wonder if that's the reason why i date white guys. something in my subconscious after hearing so many stupid remarks made me go after the one race he hasn't picked on....yet.
