The whole being dragged out thing had happened too quickly for Heather to say no - as if she even could say it - or even finish her current activity. She thought back to the poor books now still lying around on her side of the room. What would someone think if they saw that kind of messy display? (Although this was a quite common concern for Heather, who preferred her room cleaned as methodically as possible
( ... )
"Yeah. And the stuff that came back...weird." She sawed off a bit of her pretzel and chewed on it thoughtfully. "I wonder who we're talking to. Where they're from, who they are...everything, really."
She kept going, outlining her thoughts as they came up. "They must have had access to the attic, too, right? It didn't seem like the notes where coming from a wildly different country or anything, so it could have been local. It seemed like we were sending letters back and forth through the same place. But...how is that possible when we were the only ones in the attic at the time, and things were coming back almost immediately?"
Zoe frowned over the rim of her latte. "It's worth investigating, definitely. I have an idea of how we should do it, too."
"If they didn't disappear and appear while we were still in the attic.. I suppose we could have considered it an elaborate prank in that case." Even though Zoe could be very intimidating at times, Heather was still happy to at least have someone to talk about this with. It had been bothering her ever since it happened and it felt better to let some of it out. "But like this.. Um, perhaps there was some secret trick about the mailboxes themselves..?" Something like a secret compartment, perhaps? It still seemed odd for something like that to be in a mailbox though. Was that way of thinking no good after all?
Heather fully understood what Zoe meant whenever she dropped the word 'investigating'. It meant that Zoe wasn't going to stop doing (reckless) things until she found out what it was all about. It also meant that Heather was going along, no matter what she thought of it. She didn't particularly mind, but what about the ghosts! And studying! And--
"But like what? They just looked like ordinary mailboxes to me, and they looked empty when we first started putting notes in..." Zoe began attacking her pretzel, now playing with it more than anything.
Heather's stutter did not go unnoticed. Zoe raised an eyebrow at her. "Oh, relax. You act like they've all been bad ones." True, there were a few that even Zoe would rather forget, but did Heather have no faith? Of course Zoe had to investigate! It was the only thing to do, in her opinion. "I'm talking about setting up a stakeout. We find a way into the attic one night, put some more notes in the mailboxes asking about who's receiving them, and then wait and see if something comes back on its own."
She leaned back in her chair, took another sip of coffee, and nodded to herself, pleased with the idea. "I'm holding off on involving other people until I can sniff out who's really trustworthy and useful, but I might as well take you. Helping hands, and all that. But when do we go and how do we get back in...?"

"W-what kind of idea?" was her reply instead.
