Shock. Horror. Panic. Terror. These were just a few of the feelings Lawrence felt as he hit the ground. What... what was that... how long had it been since he'd felt that. It felt like ages... it was a foreign feeling. It also... hurt. Panic quickly spread through his body as he realized what had happened: Lynne had touched him. And she didn't just touch him, she punched him. He no longer had any control over himself. He looked up at them, first at Lynne, then to Ezra, then to Anthony, and backed away quickly. He stood up and stared at them, wordlessly.
Something came to mind immediately... something he took great care to bury. That feeling--the Orphanage, and the children that bullied him. The many times he'd felt this sensation in the past.
But just as soon as it came, it left. And Lawrence stood there, dumbfounded. His whole body shook. There was nothing more he could do. The only thought he had was to leave--and now. Quickly, before this continued. This situation was completely out of control. But he couldn't. He just stared. And what's worse, he was staring at Ezra. Wait, Ezra? Why Ezra? Why was he staring at Ezra so fiercely, as if he was trying to burn his face into his mind? Rational thought was gone... he just kept staring... and staring... as if he was reliving every bad moment he had before now.
...And then he snapped back to reality.
Without so much as adjusting his cravat or dusting himself off, he turned around and ran as quick as he could back inside the dormitory, offering no words to any of them as he parted.
Lynne just watched, eyes never leaving Lawrence until he left. Then, as quickly as the anger had flooded, it began ebbing away into something else. She was still pissed but as Artemis returned to the back of her mind, taking that extra edge back with her, Lynne was left acutely aware of certain things. Like, how terrible she was feeling right now, how Lawrence had looked, and how her hand ached. Her knuckles stung and a quick look made her aware that the skin was grazed (had she managed to hit it on his teeth? She couldn't remember).
She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, racking a hand through her bangs, face hot from anger and guilt.
"Shit," she said quietly. "Really...shouldn't have done that..."
If Lynne's earlier outburst had startled him, Ezra had no idea what to make of the punch. He watched the scene play out in front of him disbelievingly, but took in Lawrence's reaction with wary eyes. He'd failed in preventing the situation from going from bad to worse, but hell if he let a fight break out in front of him without lifting a finger.
The force of Lawrence's stare unnerved Ezra, and as much as he wanted to meet the other's eyes and match him, he was forced to look away after a long moment. The silence seemed to stretch out for far too long before breaking suddenly with the sound of his footsteps as he retreated at a dead sprint. Ezra watched him go for a minute before walking up beside Lynne. Earlier, she'd tensed her shoulders at his touch, so he decided not to repeat the gesture again. He hoped she could sense his silent support anyway.
"What's done is done," he said finally, his voice subdued. What could he say, really? "We should head in..." Lynne could use some time to recover, and he figured everyone was tired enough of the night's drama to comply without much fuss. Despite how intent Ezra was on herding Anthony and Lynne in, it was mostly to set his own worries at ease. He didn't know how quickly he dared head up himself... he had a feeling that sleep would be evading the agitated blond for quite some time. They didn't have to know that, though.
After a brief glance over at Anthony, Ezra turned towards the dorms. He then paused. "Sorry I dragged you into this," he muttered almost inaudibly under his breath, before making his way towards the building alone. He hoped the others would follow him shortly and not dwell on the night's events too much.
Lynne straightened her shoulders but her voice was still quiet and her eyes averted when she replied to Ezra. "You're right..."
There really wasn't much else they, or at least she, could do right now...She caught herself rubbing at her grazed knuckles and felt another unpleasant stab of emotion. Lynne tried pushing it aside, looked back at Anthony to see if he was coming, and quickly started to head towards the building.
