Here is my non-comprehensive but it'll do overview of Ultra 2008. In short, it was the shit, and here is what made it that way:
Best DJ/Act:
- Carl Cox (Two days, five hours between them, and all of it amazing!)
- Richie Hawtin (Cause it was simply amazing what he did with sound. I didn't stop dancing for the whole two hours. He even got super experimental and it was still badass to dance to. ^.^ The only reason that Carl Cox tops him is for consistency two days in a row)
- Uberzone (Cause those electronic drum things brought the fucking beats!)
Honorable Mentions:
- Evol Intent f/ MC Armanni
- Moby (who threw down the fucking techno, to my surprise)
- Underworld
- Justice
- Danny Tenaglia (This dude is like forty-something years old and he was still fucking crazy! He wore a poke-ball shirt, for god's sake)
- Josh Wink (even though he had to start late)
- DJ Hyper
- D-Lerium & Faze
- Union Jack
Acts That Let Me Down:
- Sander Van Doorn
- DJ Monk
- The entire Drum n Bass tent aside from Evol Intent
- The Crystal Method
- Sasha & John Digweed
Acts That I Knew Would Suck, and Did:
- The Entirety of the Rabbit Hole (waaaaaaaaaaaay too stuck in the past)
- Pete Tong (oh my god it was terrible)
- Armin van Buuren
- Ferry Corsten
- The Bravery
- Jes
- Junkie XL
- Tiesto/Paul Van Dyk/Benny Benassi (didn't see any of them, heard they sucked, glad I just saw Carl Cox or Uberzone)
As far as the artists go, if I didn't list them (aside from that last bulletin) then I didn't see them. And I'm perfectly cool with that. Truth be told, the first day I just stuck around the Carl Cox tent the whole fucking time, except for Justice. Only reason I saw anything else was cause they had to start late due to some sort of last minute safety hazard. The second day was more scattershot, but I still didn't see anything that I didn't want to. The only act that I missed that I wanted to see was DJ Dan vs. Donald Glaude, but whatever.
Cool Shit That Happened:
- Saw Jasmine again (awesome chick, great dancer)
- The motherfucking energy was there
- Free mix CDs
- Several thousand people going mental with me in the Carl Cox (read: Techno and great House) tent
- The finest collection of Cuban girls alive
- Having a circle form around me while I was dancing (that was awesome!)
- Black chick knocked this white bitch out in one hit
- Free condoms from the Dance 4 Life foundation
- Super adorable enthusiastic e-tards
- Bass so low it moved the fucking air (I am not joking)
- Professional lighting that was truly badass looking
- Not rolling, not drinking, barely sipping a Red Bull, and still having waaaaaaaaaay too much fun to be healthy
Bad Shit That Happened:
- FIVE DOLLAR WATER!!!!!!!!
- Having to travel through the hood (food stamps, crackheads and pregnant homeless bitches hanging with homeless crazy ass dudes under the overpass ghetto) to get to the event
- Not having a damn clue where we were going in Miami
- Sunburns
- Realizing that there was virtually no security check and that we could have waltzed into that motherfucker with pockets full of drugs (I didn't even get patted down the first day. Seriously)
- Everything being fucking expensive as hell
- No afterparties were 18+ >.<
- Stupid fucking whistles and the people who couldn't stop blowing on them
- Sleeping on the floor in our ghetto hotel
- Having to split with my group cause they had vastly different tastes than me
- Not having sex with a single stuck up Cuban girl
- Killing my old shoes to the point beyond repair
- Nearly crashing four times in Miami
- Having to leave!
So yeah, all in all, it was awesome. I'ma go next year for sure. I'm prolly gonna try to be in LA for Electric Daisy Carnival too! So heres to more parties in the future!
