SHELLS
A family was walking down the a mother, the father, and their 7 year old son. the mother and the father walk casually down the beach while the son runs ahead excited and full of energy. they continue to walk and eventually the son runs back to the parents with a face of delight. he says "LOOK WHAT I FOUND ISN'T IT BEAUTIFUL?" as he opens his hands showing a palm full of broken shells and tiny pieces of rocks. the father looks and replies "thats nice son why don't u run and get some more." the child now even more excited runs off collecting as many broken shells as he can. now the child's hands are completely full and he returns to his parents to show off his newly acquired treasure. as he returns to his parents they notice a shiny object floating in the water. it was a beautiful starfish floating in the water. the father says " son look at that. do you see it? its beautiful. go get it, it can be yours!" the son looks into the water and without hesitation runs off to go get it. he wades out into the water growing nearer and nearer to the starfish. he is soo close but the water is too deep so he returns to his dad. right as he reaches his dad his dad says " son why didn't you get it you were right there i know u can do it! it can be all yours go back and get it!" the son without a word turns around and tries again. this time the son goes even further the water is just past his lips and the light rolling waves make the water splash his nose, he is on the tips of his toes and the prize is just inches from his hands. in the background his dad is encouraging him telling him you can it! it's right there! the son so close but still unable to reach the prize gives up and turns around heading back to shore. he says "dad i can't get it. its too far." the dad angrily replies "Son why can't you get it? it was right there. i saw you, you were only an inch away. why couldn't you grab it? why!" the son replies "i didn't want to let go of my shells...
Then he said to them all: "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. -Luke9:18-
in life we sometimes strive to collect shells and refuse to let them go when there are other magnificent things we can get. we often put our broken shells in front of our more important treasures and fail to see how useless our broken tressures are. we strive after money, popularity, sexual pleasure, status, and material belongings and in the light of reality those are merely broken shells that will entertain us for the time being but will lose value in the end. Don't become the little boy who is soo close but yet so far realize, prioritize, and live!
