Dear Uncle Cedric;
Thank you for the long knife. The patterns in the steel are entrancing. It is fascinating to speculate on the skills needed to fold the metal in just the right way to achieve them.
As I was sitting enjoying after dinner cigars and brandy with some fellow gentlemen at the Club tonight, the subject of unusual deeds came up. It was mutually agreed we should limit our number to not more than ten. We all could list a great many more, but ten was decided upon as the upper limit for the sake of brevity. While we all know it is rather coarse to boast, our innate curiosity about our fellow man induced us to share brief statements of events. As the topic went around the chamber and each revealed their deeds, it was understood that the list should be consist of one or two sentences with the caveat that afterward they would be expounded upon by request.
I have copied my list here for your enjoyments. Many of these deeds you are aware of, and several you were present for, but i wanted to inform you of what was shared that evening.
I have assisted in the birth of horse, and held the newborn up until it could stand and nurse on it's own.
I have driven 4 hours to Attend and Witness the death of an old man, then whispered his name to the gods.
I have Vomited blood for two days in ICU.(more than once).
I have held and transported 1,500 troy ounces of pure gold(that 75 pounds).
I have live fired a Ten-Pound Parrott Rifle repeatedly-(not blanks - 18 oz of black powder with a spherical shell)(thats a civil war cannon if you didn't know).
I have been mistaken for a ghost at Ft Detroit(they still don't know it was a live person).
I have received 14 stitches from a sword wound.
I have issued(and received) challenges, fought and won duels(more than once).
I have been blessed by a Tibetan Lama.
I have lived in a three room sharecroppers cabin built in the 1860(no running water and one electrical line(enough for one light and a small refrigerator) for over a year.
While there are a great many more unusual and noteworthy events in my life, I was limited to ten.
Several were far to personal to reveal in open company(assisting in the birth of my Nephew Scotty for example). And many seemed somewhat trite, like my consumption of Absinthe, to share.
I have enclosed a few good bottles of Gin, I know the weather is bitter this time of year in the passes.
Ever your loyal nephew,
Tuan
