i was meant to stay with friends for a week, but didn't
now i am living/working at a camphill: a community for special needs people.
normally, there are houseparents in each house. usually it is a couple, sometimes with their natural children, who are usually "normal.
in my house, it is a single mum with two special needs kids.
Janet, the mum, is my mum's age, and comes from a similar background to me, god help her.
august is 11, has asperger's and is spoiled rotten.
akira is 12, has down's syndrome but very high functioning. she can write read etc. she has basically been allowed to run wild, and has no manners or behaviour at all.
i am here to work with the kids as well as the others in the house.
there are 3 more coworkers in the house.
there is luke 18, from oz who has been here about 6 months. he is about a foot taller than me and has a big blond afro
there is michael, 19, german. he is small and quiet, but not to be underestimated
mary, american 22. she is very whiny and drives me crazy. thank god she is only here until february
there is also muirna, 20, who is 8 months pregnant. she is the child of the houseparents in the other house. she is moving back home soon
the lads in the house are isabelle 52 down's syndrome. she needs constant care, toilet assisitance, etc. but she is lovely and cuddly
babara is 27, and also has downs. she is verbal, but not as high functioning as akira. she actually talks more than she comprehends. she also talks a lot in the night, and keeps me awake.
karl is 53, is deaf, and has cerebral aplsy. he is really funny and i enjoy being around him.
jimmy is 28, and autistic. he shouts and screams and destroys things when he is in bad form. but i still like him.
those are the people in my house. i will wirte more about what we do and where we live later. there have been about 3 people queueing for the computer for the last hour. i guess i should let them on.
