so ive been re-reading the Chronicles of Narnia again.... especially since i have a lot of free time at work. i'm reading "Prince Caspian" right now. In most of the narnian stories, Lewis uses pretty typical animals and monsters to show good and evil. the natural animals are almost always good, and the bad side has things like ogres and witches. there are a few exceptions.... wolves are bad, and many bears and giants are on the good side. dwarves are split down on both, but even the good ones tend to lean a little evil. so anyway, what is weird is in the story i'm reading now, a character named Bacchus is introduced on the good side. even though he is with Aslan, the leader of the righteous, the book describes him as being very wild and the women with him a bit intense. even the girls in the story, lucy and susan, say they would be scared to meet him if they had not been with aslan..... so i looked him up on the internet to see who this guy is.
he is the guy in the pink robe. those people with him are the wild people that are also in the narnian story. this guy is the god of wine and sex, basically. and in some ancient cities they had huge orgies in honor of this guy. those holidays eventually were outlawed because they got so crazy.
so it's strange to me that lewis would use a guy like this in a children's story... especially a story that draws so much influence from the new testament. strange, but kinda cool.
tonight, church and trackside. see you there.
