Weekly Listening

Jan 11, 2007 06:18

so it's been an interesting musical week in Robert world

Don't sometimes recieve an album, don't really like it and then pick it up after a while and love it! well this was the case with me and this album:

Mary Lou Lord - Baby Blue

When I recieved this album I played it constantly in a vain attempt to like it, but sadly it irritated me more, However last Friday I pulled it out again and I loved it, in fact when it finished I re listened to it again.
Mary Lou Lord (besides having a fling with Kurt Cobain) is singer songwriter. This is her sophomore album and it's produced my super recluse artist The Bevis Frond. Jaunty Melodies, sweet lyrics, it's quite a good record.

Also this week I bought a Riot Grrrl documentary, with lots of it dedicated to Kathleen Hanna so I revisited:

Bikini Kill : The Cd Version of the first Two Records

and

Both albums are the landmarks of the two phases of Riot Grrrl. Bikini Kill was the rock aspect and Le Tigre were the electronic aspect. Both albums are must haves for people interested in this genre.

Next up

Super Furry Animals - Phantom Power

Super Furry Animals - Guerrilla

SFA are a band of which I have tons of memories with. I was a fan of their Beach Boys go power pop since day one. Needless to say that Guerrilla is an undistubuted masterpiece. Kooky and fun it's SFA at their best. Unfortunately it is also their last 'great' album. Along the way they have grown up and Phantom Power (with the exception of golden retriever) is a sign of that. Still it's an album I find difficult liking and it does have a dull middle section. In fact I didnt even bother buying their 2004's Love Kraft There's a new album out on Rough Trade this year so let's hope they've regained that spirit.

and on to

John Cale : Hobosapiens

Although Lou Reed is a great solo artist in his own right, my leanings go toward John Cale, in my opinion he can do no wrong and with 2004's Hobosapiens he proves that.Mostly inspired by the Beta Band, Hobosapiens is a mixture of beats, acoustic guitars and weird samples. Also getting Lemon Jelly's Nick Franglen and Brian Eno to produce was a fantastic idea and not one bum note is hit here. Probably not the best Cale album to start with ( I would suggest Fear or Paris 1919) but it's one of his top albums. You don't get many artists doing this in their 60's.

Cocorosie : La Maison de mon Reve

Ahh CocoRosie. This is a great debut and listening while listening to this I felt like I was drawn into another dimension. An enchanting, Quirky album of animal voices, strumming, toys used as instrument. In the end though the important thing is that there are good songs and indeed there are!
