Passing. Dani knew what the word meant. Even if she did lack a lot of book knowledge. Which was honestly not her fault. After all, she didn't get a copy of Danny's mind or anything. Vlad downloaded just enough into her mind to pass her off as normal to trick Danny, but not enough to end up so smart she might actually see through his words on her own.
However, she did know what passing meant. In fact, she knew it meant several things, all different depending on the situation.
There was the literal passing, like people did now. Dani was always on the move. She didn't dare stay around one place too long for fear of Vlad somehow finding her. In an effort to understand how people were really like though, she'd find some place to sit down and watch people for a while. At the moment she was sitting at a cafe eating a sandwich and a drinking a cup of tea (a drink Vlad had ended up getting her to like) thanks to the money she....'borrowed' from Vlad's cottage before she left him for good. As she ate, she watched people pass her by, never giving a second glance to a young girl sitting by herself.
She wondered if people were always like that? Hurrying along, never seeming to pay attention to anything weird. Or maybe kids her 'age' usually walked around on her own? She had only been running a few weeks. Maybe she just missed them?
There was more to passing. The passing of time. Even if it didn't walk on by like the people, it still passed on by without a care. Then there was the passing for something she wasn't. Most people thought she was a normal kid. No, scratch that, most people thought she was an adorable kid. The few people she talked to said she was so 'sweet and adorable' usually with a comment on how naive and innocent she was. Sometimes it was in a tone she was pretty sure was insulting and sometimes it was in that tone of an over affectionate person. Well, at least if she would accurately compare the Maddie hologram to real people. She passed for 'normal' if 'naive.'
Of course, she wasn't normal. Normal didn't involve melting into a pile of green goo.
...that had been another passing.
Death. Death was another passing. Something she was becoming closer and closer to as time passed, unknown by the people passing her by because she passed for a normal kid. She was always in danger of passing, just because she might pass her limit.
Just like they did, the other clones.
Dani shook her head. No, no, she wasn't going to think about that. She has to pass for normal. So she had to repress the sad thoughts and embrace the happy, spunky attitude she had inherited from her original's DNA. Especially if she was cute enough that by being so the waitress might give her something extra or make one of the things she ordered for free.
That way she had another day she could pass without going completely hungry later.
