We entertain such flagrant narcissism.  We, as humans, find ourselves enigmatic and unpredictable.  Ostensibly, this curse, the inevitable curse of unpredictability, is used as degradation.  The deplorable standing of random is, by definition, maladaptive, and as such, undesired.  However, I feel that we use this “the element of human unpredictability” to differentiate ourselves from the dregs of the biological world.  We feel that this “reason”, that we claim so fallaciously to have, is what makes us above the animals.  Reason is, of course, the ability to analyze and judge a situation.  In reality, what reason is, is nothing more than the ability to predict outcomes and act accordingly.  Biologically, this would be rooted in our prediction of prey and mate behavior.  We know, however, that all animals have the latter down; which brings us to the former.  The prediction of prey is a property that all predators posses.  This is responsible for their enlarged neo-cortical areas, or overall brain hypertrophy.  Thus all predators have a form of “reason” and free will; free will to act as they see fit, to execute a prey dependent task.  Humans do such and can, in such an embellished state, predict and recognize their ability to predict.  Humans fit the mold yet again.

All hail the conquering genome.
