Super Sentai and Kamen Rider are two-thirds of what make the major toku franchise in Japan. The third would be Ultraman. Blahblahblah it has a long history blahblahblah been around since forever. The things you need to know about it are:

1) it's the oldest toku franchise out there okay you probably didn't need to know that

2) always has silver-red (or sometimes silver-blue or silver-red-blue) giants saving the planet that can end with awkward screencaps

3) bad rubber monster costumes that are usually lol-worthy or actually grotesque on several levels

4) staple of Japan

5) morning kids' show so it usually comes with a moral message

The Ultra (aka the world-saving giants) either bond with a human host -- usually saving the human's life -- or take on a human appearance. And then with a supporting team, they fight giant space aliens, etc. GIANT SOMETHINGS.

Ultraman Nexus was created as a show to be directed at adults, not children. So you get an underlying plot throughout the entire series and maybe the monster is killed off in an episode but it can take as many as four episodes to finally defeat a foe. And not because the fights are long. Nexus relies more human drama and plot than endless fights. If you can get past giant silver men fighting giant monsters, Nexus takes itself seriously and tends to keep far away from dumb humor, carrying a darker tone overall.

The very, very basic premise of Ultraman Nexus is this: Space Beasts are attacking the world. The secret organization, TLT, carries out secret projects commands several units to fight them and keep the battles a secret. Memory Police wipe memories away from anyone survivors of attacks and the Night Riders are the specialized fighting force against Space Beasts. And then with the monsters getting bigger, the mysterious Ultraman Nexus appears~

TLT - Terrestrial Liberation Trust

Kirisawa Yuu - 17 (camper)

People in TLT call him the Illustrator. He's that mysterious young person dressed in white that orders people seven to ten years older than him around. He tends to stay in his 'room' and appear to everyone in holographic form, uttering some puzzling sentence that incites "WHAT DO YOU MEAN?" and much hair-pulling from others. If you throw in the rumors that say he's possibly precognitive and telepathic, the inevitable conclusion is 'of course he's a cryptic ass'.

Nonomiya Mizuo - 17 -20 (camper)

One of the Memory Police (MP), she'll top you kindly, so kindly. Because she thinks she's doing them a world of good, Mizuo likes to go around and erase people's memories of their traumatizing encounters with Space Beasts. Hey, it's in her job description. If only she had realized that being a part-time stalker was also in her job description. Oops. She'll stare down someone holding a gun in her face without flinching and if someone's suspicious? She'll run their ass down -- leaving the boys behind -- and then proceed to take them out with her bare hands.

NIGHT RAIDERS (aka the guys that get to use big guns)

Komon Kazuki - 24 (counselor)

GAY FOR ULTRAMAN. No, I mean ... REALLY GAY FOR ULTRAMAN. If a competition for biggest abused woobie was held, Komon would place. He's the main character and 'eyes' of the series which translates to 'the everyday man and moral compass'. Also REALLY REALLY EXTRAORDINARILY GAY FOR ULTRAMAN. The Ultraman hosts could request that he strip off his clothes and he would do it in a heartbeat. The fact that he made it through life without getting trampled to death is quite astounding. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, meet the Ultimate Doormat.

Saijyou Nagi - 27 (counselor)

People you should be afraid of: NAGI. The second-in-command of the Night Raiders, Nagi kicks ass and doesn't bother to take your name. This woman tells new members "If you do that again, I will shoot you" while holding a gun to your face and you had better fucking believe it. That's how you do blunt. Space Beasts don't know enough to cower in fear, but they should because she hates their guts (and distrusts anything even vaguely related to them if you read 'distrust' as 'attempt to shoot holes in them immediately'). Betrayed once, she doesn't trust easily and, well, if someone abuses that trust, they had better run because not even their mommy can save them.

Hiraki Shiori - mid-twenties (counselor)

With her smiles and winks and nail polish, the first reaction might be 'oh it's one of those cutesy women'. That's called letting your guard down. Underneath all of that is someone that will slam a person face first into a wall in a flash and talk lovingly of her state-of-the-art stunner. She's no wilting flower and if a fight's coming, she eagerly awaits it. So she can beat them into a pulp. Or maybe take them out from afar since she's the so-called marksman of the team.

OTHER

Himeya Jun

AKA the Second Dunamist (the person bonded with Ultraman). MR I AM DARK AND MYSTERIOUS. Is it surprising that he comes with the requisite traumatizing past that causes him a great deal of angst? He gets to be heroic and brooding in his ultra-cool brown leather jacket (don't laugh at him D: ). But the man's not a dumby. He doesn't trust TLT and what sane person would? A worldwide secret organization that can't decide between wanting to shoot him or hold his hand in the most unpleasant way possible. He's so full of angst that when he smiles ... it's incredibly awkward.
