Dusty Skirt

Oh, my goodness. I've been so busy lately. I'm determined to make an actual entry. But where to begin? There are so many things I want to write about. More importantly, there are tons of things I want to post pictures from. But where to begin? Well...I suppose I'll start with my Birthday Hike.

On May 20th, I hit the ripe old age of 27. On Saturday May 29th, a group of us went hiking up Echo Mountain via the Sam Merrill Trail to celebrate. Hikers were encouraged to wear a skirt. If you wore a skirt, you got a cookie. I wore a big gold lame tutu. One lady said to us, "You look ridiculous for this hike!" I responded with, "Thank you!" Hikers were also encouraged to bring cake/cupcakes to eat at the top of the mountain. Much to my amusement, sexychicken brought crabcakes. littlechels, being as adorable as she is, went all out and made cupcakes from scratch!

The hike is 5.4 miles roundtrip with 1,380 feet of elevation gain. At the top, we explored the ruins of The White City, an old resort that was once plagued by natural disaster. Per wikipedia: "A series of natural disasters ate away at the facilities, the first of which was a kitchen fire that destroyed the Echo Mountain House in 1900. A 1905 fire destroyed the rest of the Echo buildings except for the observatory and the astronomer's cabin. In 1909 a flash flood tore out the Rubio Pavilion. In 1928 a gale force wind toppled the observatory. And in 1936 an electrical fire wiped out the Tavern. The Mount Lowe Railway was officially abandoned in 1938 after a horrendous rain washed most everything off the mountain sides. Today, the ruins of Mount Lowe Railway remain as a monument to a once-ever experienced enterprise. It was placed on the National Register of Historical Places on January 6, 1993."

If you have never hiked this trail, I highly recommend it. It is one of my favorites. Here are photos from my birthday hike:
