No one who saw the news can believe that we didn't suffer any damage in the huge Dec. 2-3 storm that whipped through our area and left thousands without power for more than a week. Even though our home is old, and even though our roof was only guaranteed to last five more years (and that was 18 months ago) we made it through without a speck of damage to the outside of our home.
Our neighbor, Jacquelin, wasn't so lucky. Their entire roof came off in the storm and they suffered an insane amount of water damage to their interior. They had to repaint, get new carpet, everything! Right now, she's in the frustrating process of dealing with her
house insurance company to get reimbursed for the damages. Everything that happened is clearly covered in her policy, its just a matter of jumping through a lot of hoops. In the meantime, the money we're paying her for baby-sitting will definitely help out with deductibles and other costs.
I don't know how much worse things can get, weather-wise. But if you ask the global warming people, fossil fuels are going to keep on messing with our weather systems, bringing even more rain and storms. I don't know how much I trust people who think they can predict this kind of thing for a whole year in advance, but obviously someone is believing them because insurance prices seem to be rising, worldwide. Thankfully, ours isn't going to though, since we never had to make a claim. Phew!
