Choice and Emotional Sobriety

The card from the Norse Tarot today is the Seven of Cups:

I suppose if I woke in the middle of the night to find three dwarfs bearing gifts of golden cups, I'd be as bewildered as this man.  The number seven deals with challenges, and in the cups suit, it involves choosing what will fulfill you emotionally and spiritually.  Humans tend to look at short-term results, rather than long-term consequences.  With regard to our choices, what seemed like so much fun at first, often doesn't continue to be so after a few months or years.  The partner you partied with in much merriment when you were young, doesn't seem quite so amusing as an out-of-work alcoholic passed out in his recliner.  It is wise to avoid knee-jerk reactions in making those big life choices.  As the saying goes, all that glitters isn't gold.

The card from the Wolf Pack today is "Balance:"

Balancing on anything floating in water takes skill and focus.  In this case, the water represents the emotional ups and downs of life.  Just as an alcoholic can lose his sobriety, so can a person lose their emotional sobriety.  When our emotions are in control, our rational thinking gets thrown overboard.  We say and do things that normally would not seem very sane.  Bill Wilson once stated, "If we examine every disturbance we ever have, great or small, we will find at the root of it some unhealthy dependency and its consequent unhealthy demand."  What demands does he refer to?  We demand other people supply us with prestige (self-esteem), security (financial and emotional), and happiness - an unrealistic ultimatum to say the least.  Every time I take an emotional "soaking," it is a reminder that emotional balance will only come from a solid spiritual foundation rather than other people.
