I should be reading or sleeping but I'll do this quickly.
I went to my first capoeira class yesterday, been itching to do it for a while. My cousin and her boyfriend in Chile are capoeira freaks so I figure I need to hop on that train before I move, plus its so damn cool.
So I go to the YMCA in the morning to catch a class, which I knew probably would't be that great, with Samuka, this Brasilian dude who works at the Y. The class was fun but it was basically myself, this kid from TL, a middle-aged woman with her little kid and a 65 year old woman. I learned a few things, learned a few songs in portugese, banged on a tambourine for while.
But later that day I drove into Berkeley to check out a class at Capoeira Arts Cafe on Addison. I went in and a kids class was just finishing up, these kids were awesome! So I talked to a guy about starting up, turns out this class was "All Levels" but you had to take 3 intro classes before you went on to that class, so I had to watch. But I was cool with that, I got some tea and sat down.
The class was super cool, the Mestre, this woman called Suelley ran it, she was fun to watch. But here's what caught my attention most. One of the little girls who was doing capoeira before was walking around the place. I heard her talking in English before to her brother who was there, then she calls out to him for something while he's doing capoeira...only in Portugese this time. So I'm like whoa, Portugese and English and this girl can't be more than 7 yaers old. Then she starts talking to this other woman, and tells her she speaks 5 languages. French, English, Portugese, Spanish and Italian. WTFFFF and she's awesome at capoeira.
So I left there pumped to start and self assured that my kids will be multilingual from birth! So I'm going back there tomorrow for a class if I can find the time.
Also hung out with Jeff Berlin for a part of the day, saw some of Berkeley, ate Ethiopian food with Jeff and Jena which was very nice, then headed home.
Spent a nice day in Sonoma with the family for Mother's Day. Ate some good Thai food there.
Sharks lost bad. Again...
Time to get some rest.
