Red Sox 2003 blather
.
NESN's What If... just made me pissed off all over again.
(What If... looks at various pivotal sports moments, starting, predictably, with Grady F'ing Little sending Pedro out for the 8th/leaving Pedro in to blow a 3-run lead. Infuriating. Though inexplicably, they played the entire game over, with Don and Remy calling it [and I would give cash money to have heard that particular recording session, since the game was a FOX postseason game and not on NESN]. While it was fun to see Clemens get shelled, and then see Ortiz hit a pre-2004 postseason home run off a badly mustachioed David Wells, why are they wasting hours and hours of my time?)
Let's leave the 8th inning alone for a second.
Pedro getting out of the 7th was scary. He got two outs, gave up a Giambi HR (yay, steroids!), then two hard hit singles, then K'ed the free-swinging Soriano to get out of it with the score 5-2. Pointed to the sky. Hugged Nomar. He's DONE. If you decide to send Pedro back out, you give him a baserunner, maybe two. YOU DON'T LET HIM GIVE UP THE LEAD!!!eleventy!!1
100 simulations, taking Pedro out in the 8th resulted in a Sox win 82 times. I HATE YOU, GRADY. 15 simulations went into extras, with the Sox winning 10 of those. HATE. 20 sims of Petey staying in; Sox win 15. ARGH!
::deep breath::
Know what? 2004 did wonders for me, but that the 2003 game was so winnable still infuriates me.
