[But what about him? If Merlin did... If the Dorocha...]
[Merlin remembers the cold that took all the feeling from his body. But the veil was still torn and he knows what Arthur still plans to do to heal it.]
This isn't the time to start doubting. We figure out why we're here and how to get back home. Everything else will fall into place.

[ He'd like to believe you, Merlin, really, he would. ]
Have you looked out the window? Have you heard these people speak as though they know who we are? There is a man with my face. There are people who can do magic. This is not where we belong, Merlin.

[Because manservants always come in handy in a crisis. He's still thankful that Arthur can't read his thoughts as he looks around the apartment.]

I've been told when we return nothing will have changed without us.

[He glances over and lifts his brows.]
That's a good thing though. Wouldn't want to think about the alternative.

[ But Arthur isn't sure. And for all that he already hates this place Arthur wonders if perhaps it's a blessing in a truly excellent disguise. They must go home, of course they must. But in the meantime... ]
Do you think anyone here knows a better way to close the veil between the worlds?
[ Or how to keep Merlin from throwing himself headlong into harm's way. ]

[Merlin had considered it. The idea that maybe...maybe this place could help them. Why else would time stop back home? It must be waiting for their return, and what they've learned with it.]
What if-
[It feels too soon to even suggest it. But Arthur's already seen for himself just how many people here have magic. He's spoken to them...insulted a great many of them. But it's not the secret that his magic is.]
What if the veil could be healed by magic?

[ A stern reaction, and an automatic one. After a moment he thinks about it. Death, or magic? It seems like it should be a simple choice. It's not. Arthur sighs, starts to pace. ]
You really have the most idiotic ideas sometimes, Merlin. I mean, what are we going to do, take one of these sorcerers back with us? I don't think it works that way.

[Merlin swallows hard, suddenly reminded of the stream near his boyhood home. In winter it would freeze over, and Merlin would take his chances when gathering firewood, treading lightly but hearing the way it cracked and threatened to give under his feet.]
But if there's a chance that someone knows another way, a way where no one has to die...
[He trails off, practically boneless as he sinks back against the couch.]

[ It's not quite as clear-cut as that: Arthur will not compromise his morality out of cowardice. If he has to die, then he has to die. And Merlin... ]
[ Arthur comes over to the strange chair and leans against the back of it, both hands flat, shoulders bunched and looking down on him. ]
What if you're already dead. That girl. [ He jerks his head towards Catty's rooms. ] She said...

[He's quiet for a moment. It's not a question that he hasn't already asked himself. If he isn't already dead, he knows he soon will be unless they find another way.]
Promise you'll be nicer to your next servant. And don't use my word.

I'm not getting another servant, clotpole. You took long enough to get it right, I'm not going through that again.

[Get your own nonsensical insults! Merlin frowns more for that than the sting of his ear.]
We're going home and defeating the Doracha and sealing the veil. It's as good as decided. How else would everyone know about you?
