Another word for sorry?
Is there another word apart from sorry that you can use when you want to sympathise with someone? When I am told about something that has gone wrong I instinctively say how sorry I am and invariably get the reply "It's not your fault" which I know but can never think of another way of expressing regret without sounding incredibly trite. "What a shame" never seems to trip off my tongue...
