Wednesday Morning Poll Post

Yes...it's the afternoon now. But somehow this didn't post the first time. So, pretend it's from a just-caffeinated mind.

Poll Grammar of the Now

poll, grammar

This surprised me. I had thought for the longest, that a double period is standard, but after several scripts and scriptwriting reference books, found it is just not done anymore. Damned hard to get used to, though.

Uh-huh. Our Development and Marketing Director is a single-space gal, I'm a double-space boy. We've had actual fights over it when copy-editing together.

I haven't even tried. I do the double space all the time and the last thing I do before I submit to my publisher is a universal search and replace to 'correct' them. :))

I love that higher-resolution computer screens and printers have fundamentally changed grammar, though.

I just hope texting doesn't do the same thing.

Ugh - I'm being nitpicky on my own post - I suppose that's technically typesetting, not grammar.

We have a particular patron - well in her 60s - who uses "Thanx" in her emails to us. DRIVES ME CRAZY.

I get e-mails from my mom that start:

Dear [real name],

and end with

Love,

Mom

I adore it. SO MUCH.

I have my "professional" email format - which acknowledges the informality of email while still maintaining at least the illusion of civilized communication.

It follows:

[Name of Addressee]-

[Text in Block format]

_geoff

Yes, that's my structure for work e-mails, too. After a rapport has developed I loosen it a bit, but only if editor or publishing pro has loosened first. Fan I get relaxed with pretty quick, but not until after two or three cycles of e-mails.

I will quit LIFE if texting language becomes acceptable outside of phones. I refuse to use it even for texting!
