[A long pause, and a dot where her pen rests against the page. Then written slowly and neatly:]

Is that from Mrs. Garrison?

I don't think deciphering handwriting is part of the course requirements.

What are you going to write?

[but he's a special snowflake] I'll write what it's about. Weak people always lose.

I think it's about how people are cruel to each other. All of these people have experienced cruelty at the hands of others, some of them have had their dreams and faith in change crushed by [A slight pause.] simple, sometimes unconscious, sometimes deliberate cruelty. Usually it's thought of as white people having had the upper hand, but this poem even includes them in the first line. If it's about the weak losing and suffering, we're all weak. [Pause.] A representative from every group experiences it. We're all united in that suffering and misery

[pause, then he carefully underlines 'mighty crush the weak']

That's wrong. If we were all weak, this world would be balanced. But it isn't. There are strong people and there are weak people. And there are plenty who get by without suffering.

Even if you think you're strong, you can always find someone who can hurt you. You can never make yourself invulnerable.

You can make it so others can't hurt you.
