A man can survive a fire and still be laid out when a head cold attacks him. I haven't been reading this book because of that. I have some catching up to do ( Read more... )

[slowly and lightly-scrawled, pencil:]

This is the first time I've seen this book write. Much more catching up?

Tell me about the owl? And you?
Who are you?

I haven't written in a few weeks, since before the fire on at the Black Cat.

The owl was one I found living in my roof. I wrote about it before but after the fire and my cold I forgot to update the books about it.

My name is Dan Dreiberg. You?

I will look for pages about the owl then.
I don't think it's there, though. Perhaps I was late.

I didn't find this soon enough.

[pause.]

Hello, Dan Dreiberg. How do you like to be called?

I am feeling well today. The weather was quite cool. It is good thinking weather.
I found this pencil under my chair. Now I can participate as well.

Are you healthier now?

Good thing you found it then.

Much. Thanks for asking.

I am told quite often that one has nothing if they do not have their health. Do you think that's true?

I think you could be the richest man alive but if you don't have your health the wealth isn't as much as a comfort as it should be.

[after a thoughtful pause.]

I wonder if an ailing wealthy man is happier than a poor one. Would the wealthy man trust the people hovering over his sickbed to be true friends, or perhaps only crows waiting to feed?
What do you think?

I think that depends on the man.

I also think that a rich man has more options when it comes to doctors and treatment.

That's also true.

Are you a rich man, Dan?

What is your family like? May I ask?
I would be interested to know.

Why would you like to know? I'm not saying I won't tell you, I'm just curious.
