I've had a long day of paper-chasing, which has resulted in the departmental secretary for Chem knowing me by name. Ah well. I guess my reputation is doomed to be one of ditziness. On the plus side, I think I got all the initial stuff sorted, and now there's only experimental paperwork (COSHH and DSEAR assessments, etc.) and write-ups to deal with. For a bit. It's looking like I should aim to have the lit review section coherently drafted by January, and the entire thesis done in March. But the lab is nice and shiny, and there are three other MSci/MChem students in my chem lab group, plus some nice-seeming postgrads and a postdoc.

Things will be a bit confusing for a few days, but I'm hoping to start at least the prepwork for synthesising an ATP analogue, adenosine alpha-thiotriphosphate, on Thursday. A lot of the earlier stages will mostly be solvent purification and drying things out (in the molecular sense, i.e. exclusion of moisture using drying agents and atmospheres). I aim to spend most of tomorrow reading the lit, putting together a gameplan and sorting out my COSHH/DSEAR (safety/risk) assessment. In theory, I can't really start until I get my safety forms back, and also until Dave is back from wherever he's going tomorrow and the next day, so he can sign off the fact that I've thought about what I'm doing.

Ooh, how nice. I've just got an email confirming that I've completed all the necessary paperwork to *start*. Now I just have to keep from screwing up...
