So Quartzie writes,

"YAY FOR INTERNET AT HOME NOW!!

so we need a long entry including all these details:
- how is work going? do you work with cool people?
- what is your place like?
- what is there to do in fort mcmurray?
- what is the weather like?
- how did you leave things in ed? you are john are still breaking? are you paying rent to kim and keeping your stuff there?"

work is really good. much slower pace than downtown edmonton with all its depanding impatient business people. instead of 30 reservations and 7 staff, we have maybe 3-5 deals and 2 staff. bigger area and less supplies - we are located in the posh sawridge hotel (think the Great Northern) and so share the front desk with the front desk ppl. a tad crowded but on the whole not too bad. i mean we have a freaking waterfall and river and goldfish and a fancy buffet and 25' ceilings. what other branch can say that? i work with calvin. he is my manager and i am the Ass Man :) so all in all we keep pretty busy. supposed to only be 8-6 m-f, 9-12 sat, closed sun. but given that we both get paid commission off the branch, and given that most of our business is large corp accounts, when they have ppl flying in (daily) we end up doing p/ups and drop offs at the airport at 7am, 8:30pm etc. hell, this weekend i had a 1pm and a 5:30 pm deal saturday and a 8am deal today, on my one day off. i think that might be part of Their plan. the clut moves you to a strange city were you are so lonely and bored that you are happy to do after hours deals because it gets you out of the house. maybe not, but it seems to be working. so mostly just calvin that i work with. he started the branch here 5 months ago, and has been running it by himself until i got here 2 weeks ago. that said it is hard to say how cool he is. i think he is pretty good, but given that we work together all day every day and he is veyr used to doing everything himself and running the show , and i am not used to running th eshow or in fact knowing anything about the city here or the accounts, it is creating a little tention because i am SUPPOSED to be running the show (as ass man) and he is supposed to be handling the back end. oh well. as i get more used to things here i will naturally take over and he will be more relaxed about letting me do so. i think. i hope! he was gone this friday so our area manager came up to help me. i relaly like calvin so dont' take this the wrong way, but when i became the fort mac expert (area manager only here now and then) it was sooo easy to run the show. he jsut unquestioningly did what i said, and trusted me! while it is nice to have calvin to answer my questions about how to do things, and how he ahs been running things, with him gone, and not able to answer i jsut had to do things how i wanted to and it seemed to work well enough anyway. the place didn't burn down i mean. :) plus area manager and i (who have never worked together or really even talked - i used to have diff area manager when i was in ed) totally got along. really really well, which had been a concern of mine. but totally hit it off. so YEAY!

i think i already talked abotu the hotel in which we work, but my "batchelorette appartment" ended up being an 8X6 room in a lady's house. so really weird living in someone's house. i feel like i am fourteen again hiding out in my room. a little uncomfortable using her dishes and appliences and being in her space. but what can you do? i can't afford to live alone here even if i could find a plce (not likely). i am sure it will get less weird as time goes on.

don't really know what there is to do here as i run away to edmonton for MY entertainment :) but there are lots of restaurants, and two movie theatres, adn a teeny shopping mall. apparently snowmobiling, gambling, hunting and bowling are all big hits too.

weather is cold. about a month behind edmonton. so snow is starting to melt during the days. apparently it is unseasonably warm with the day time hits of +5, and overnight lows of -10. but it is livable. not kelowna, but so few places are. and this is all part of the road to hawaii . . . one promotion at a time.

no one has any idea what is going on with john and i. or at least i don't and i am pretty sure john doens't. i had told everyone (cept the 'rents) that we broke up, but he didn't tell anyone. then we were being "just friends" and that was leading to an abnormal amount of hugging which lead into abnormally passionate and frequent "snuggling." so i was confused but trying to back off as that was seeming to be the best way to "get him" so i stopped calling him, and he started calling me everyday or at least every second day. and i planned my weekends sans john, and he would manage to arrange a time to hook up around my events. then he helped me move up here. now we talk every couple days, and when i go back to edmonton for the weekends (last two weekends, couldnt' go this weekend because calvin gone, going next weekend) i stay at his place. i miss little static like CRaZY so might have to stay there this weekend just to get cuddle time with him :) so i guess we are just "dating" and no, he hasnt' said the magic words yet.

yes, i am paying rent to kim and left most of my stuff there. got a little twin bed for my tiny room here because my queen woulnd't fit - or rather it woudl fit, but then the door couldnt' close. so have two small dressers, twin bed and a half closet with my work clothes. brought my towel, bedding and after-hours clothes which stay in the basement with my computer. everything else is in edmonton. for now. kim just found out she has to move back to vancouver for longer than she thought so we will be giving up the appartment soon. and i think i will end up putting the stuff into storage there because as much as i want my own place, rent here is too freaking expensive, and there is no availiblity. 99% occupancy rate. if you find a basement suite or a bachelor appartment youare looking at 1500 minimum, more likely 2000$ a month. i totally can't afford that as my little room here is already more than my appartment in edmonton. they pay cost of living bonuses, but that isnt' enough, and i woudl rather save the extra and pay off student loans faster, although it is working out that i spend the extra on gas going to ed. oh well. apperantly i get isolation pay tax credit/deduction or something too.

k. this basement is FREEZING. might have to go warm up and come down again later.
