World Cup

Jun 05, 2006 17:52

So one of my most favorite months every four years is coming up very soon.

thats right its the world cup.

i still rememeber my first world cup match. It was between England and Brazil. I remeber how i was argueing with mark hockenberry about who would win.

brazil obviously took home the victory.

Though, i have been reading the news about the recent activities invovlving a variety of racist and ethnic slurs being thrown about.

Soccer has been such a huge part of my life. and i know and feel the competitiveness that goes on in that arena. a battlefield even. I of course am always on the last line of defense, but it gives me a chance to see the battle taking place in front of me.

In my setting these battles would seem insignificant. the pride of victory or how we play is of our own and possibly the respect of our opponents.

but in a national setting, this is a battle of pride, with the entire nation backing their team.

In a way it touches me how civil strife is ended because of such pride of a single entity of perhaps 50 people who know how to do some fancy moves with a ball.

but how this pride is directed at the opponents wrenches my heart. I remember seeing the imagine of one of the african teams hitler saluting the german crowd, responding to degradations to his own racism and ethnicity.

and wow i just read that and i feel like i need to go back to swiney's english class

well more later i believe. i'll catch most of you guys this weekend.
