Title: Stumbling Start
For: jooniee
Rating: PG-13
Pairing: female!Kris/female!Kyungsoo
Length: 1200w
Summary: Kris is hopeless and Kyungsoo is perfect.

Kris is making pamphlets.

Kris is folding pieces of paper into thirds and passing them to Joonmyun who is humming as he tapes them closed with yellow smiley face stickers. The only thing remotely redeeming about this torture is the way Kyungsoo breezes into the small, dusty room and picks up the finished pamphlets - the ones advertising the healthiest places to eat near campus along with the warnings of over indulging on things like ramen and pizza - stacking them in small boxes and carrying them back out. Kris couldn’t care any less about the nutritional value of the thai place three blocks from her dorm, but the way Kyungsoo smiles at her every time she comes in has Kris’ heart racing and her cheeks heating up.

“Kristine?” Joonmyun calls, waving a pamphlet in her face because Kris is still staring at the closed door Kyungsoo just went through, her pink pleated skirt swishing along her thighs in a very tempting fashion.

She glares over at Joonmyun, annoyed that he interrupted her introspection about whether Kyungsoo’s cheeks could turn that exact shade of pink. “I told you not to call me that,” she grumps, returning to her folding.

Joonmyun gives a long suffering sigh, going back to work with a shake of his head. Kris doesn’t have any sympathy because he’s the reason she’s here. Well, him and the promise of being able to spend some time with the one and only Kyungsoo, campus princess and all around perfect being. Only it’s less Kyungsoo and more papercuts than Kris reasons she’s had in her entire life.

Too bad for Kris that her raging crush on Kyungsoo will most likely never come to fruition considering her own penchant for being as personable as a brick wall. Kyungsoo is a fresh beam of sunlight pouring through the curtains on a summer day, her smile brightening any atmosphere and laughter so soft and tinkling it could probably put an end to war. But Kris is abrasive, her stern bone structure and default facial expressions more akin to a pissed off cat than an approachable human being. Kris’ love is a doomed love.

It’s well past sunset when they finish, the three person team getting through the stacks of papers and rolls of stickers after hours of nonstop collating. Kris bends back in her chair, groaning when her spine pops in several places. Kyungsoo is on her phone in the corner, twirling a piece of her long black hair around her finger and letting it go, only to start over and Kris lets out a dreamy sigh.

Joonmyun, of course, is there to bring her back to reality again, snorting in his amusement. “I’m going to go home and drink about six cups of coffee so I don’t fall asleep and have nightmares about yellow fucking smiley faces hunting me down.”

Kris waves him off, not thinking clearly until the door shuts and she’s left alone - with Kyungsoo. So maybe she’s not technically alone, but anything other than awkward smiling and Kris is done for. There’s just enough time for the panic to make her heart pick up speed and her palms to sweat before Kyungsoo is pocketing her phone, the heels on her shoes oddly loud in the room.

“Walk me to my dorm?” Kyungsoo asks, her face so hopeful that Kris nods (far too enthusiastically) without thinking twice.

Kris wonders if there’s an etiquette for this. Perhaps she should be a few paces behind Kyungsoo in case she trips and needs to be caught. Kris allows Kyungsoo to move ahead of her and deems the idea too volatile seeing as all Kris sees are Kyungsoo’s thighs peeking out from her skirt, tapering down to her well formed knees and rounded calves. It’s probably a bad sign that Kris is salivating.

It’s too late when Kris looks up because Kyungsoo has stopped and is looking at her in confusion. “Is there something on my skirt?” she asks and the starts plucking at the fabric, her perfectly rounded nails twisting the material straight as she inspects.

“N-no,” Kris stutters, trying to force down the hot blush that wants to invade her cheeks.

And then Kyungsoo does something terrible. She pokes her lip; she pokes her lip with her nail and pushes it into the plump skin. It’s so distracting, Kris’ eyes immediately zeroing in on their target with pinpoint accuracy. And oh boy, is that ever a tempting sight. Kris licks her own lips, just imagining what it would be like to kiss Kyungsoo, to bite down on the swell of her lower lip and tease her until she whines into her mouth.

Kris swallows - hard.

Kyungsoo steps toward Kris, concern on her pretty face as she peers up at her. “Are you ill?” she asks.

Wow, Kyungsoo is right there and Kris is the master of screwing things up, so when she tilts her head down, intent on maybe just getting a whiff of Kyungsoo’s shampoo or getting to see her eyes up close, what she gets is Kyungsoo’s forehead bashing into her mouth.

Kris sinks to the ground from mortification. And pain, but mostly mortification. She has a hand over her mouth, pushing against her throbbing lips as she sweeps her tongue over the injured area to make sure she isn’t bleeding. Kyungsoo crouches in front of her and Kris wants to sob because Kyungsoo’s knees are touching the sidewalk and her skin is too precious to be subjected to such harsh terrain.

“I’m so sorry,” Kyungsoo apologizes, frantic as she waves her hands around, almost as if she’s trying to touch Kris but doesn’t know where.

“I’m fine,” is Kris’ answer although it’s mostly unintelligible because her mouth is covered and it really does hurt.

“Let me see,” Kyungsoo commands and Kris drops her hands so fast it scares her.

She can already feel her top lip swelling on the left side and she probably looks more ridiculous than usual. Kyungsoo presses around it and Kris hisses, pulling back and immediately regretting it when she sees the frown on Kyungsoo’s face. “M’fine,” she reaffirms.

“Hold still,” Kyungsoo whispers and Kris obeys, again, and wonders if she was a dog in her past life because she takes simple instruction well.

Kyungsoo has her palms on the sides of Kris’ face and they’re soft, guiding her in and Kris can’t breathe when she feels the cushion of Kyungsoo’s lips on her own, kissing right where it hurts. She freezes in place, too scared to do anything until Kyungsoo pulls away, smiling.

“How did you -? Why did you -”

“Joonmyun told me,” Kyungsoo admits and there’s a blush on her cheeks that Kris neatly files away as something she wants to see again and again.

“Oh,” is her dumb reply.

“Can you still walk me back to my dorm?”

Kris can’t say no to that, or to the way Kyungsoo tugs on her hand to pull her off the sidewalk. (It’s the start of a long list of things Kris can’t say no to.)
