The boatswain took out the finished stick of tobacco and tossed it to the ground, stamping it out before he turned and re-entered the ball. The food had already arrived - food a lot better than Ryohei's horrendous cooking, at any rate - and made his way to the seat where he was assigned to; and then paused when he saw who was siting next to him.
Of all people... that damned mechanic. Hijikata just had to wonder what in the seven hells did he do to deserve all this karma - first getting involved with his cousin's brat and then this. The samurai snorted in annoyance, although he knew he couldn't do anything about it - obligation over everything else; his priorities over his opinions. That was how he worked, that was how he lived ever since he'd been disowned by his family. So the man only made his way to the seat, stopping short as Kiros let out a weary-sounding sigh.
"Don't do that," snorted out the boatswain as he pulled back his chair, dark eyes half-glaring at the mechanic. "You're giving out a pathetic image." He said, as he settled down in the seat next to the other and crossed his arms, obviously annoyed at the seating arrangements as of now.

As if this night couldn't get any damn worse!
It took all of Kiros' willpower not to get right up and flee from the usually angry boatswain, fleeing out of this ridiculous banquet and as faaaar away from the Victoria as possible. He could easily tell the lieutenant was still quite cross with him from events prior to this peace conference and to be honest; Kiros didn't want to cross words with Hijikata right now. Bad enough that half of the world now knew how disorganized and rowdy the crew of the Victoria was and it was all his fault! The mechanic tried not to sigh again at the thought of the other lieutenant involved, Lt. Richard Gumshoe...
That big idiot...
Kiros would be lying if he wasn't worried about the kind hearted man, knowing all too well that the helmsmen wouldn't make an appearance here after all that drama earlier. Jeez, the guilt was starting to lay on thick on his subconscious now. The mechanic really did not want to be here anymore. "Tch, very well." Kiros commented back to the boatswain as he kept his gaze upon a few of the others who now came to the dinner table.
"Enjoying yourself, sir?" He asked rather nonchalantly without much care if the samurai answered him or not.

It wasn't that the boatswain loathed Kiros or anything - the only person he really loathed would be that annoyance of a first mate, Edgeworth. The mechanic, on the other hand, was someone that while did grate on his nerves with his occasional idioticness and other things that got to him (and a lot of things got to him easily, sadly), was still someone that he could speak with... somewhat. It was an improvement from just the usual orders and wordless grunting that was long associated with Hijikata, at least.
As an answer, Hijikata only snorted irritably, eyes closed and a frown crossing his features, deepening the obvious scowl that was on his face. "Tch. What do you think?" he grumbled out, voice half-annoyed and half-chiding. "There's a reason why I hate going to bullshit like this."

He thought it would be a great idea to bring two warring fractions to the dinner table and civilly come to an accord without the usage of weapons and such. Yet, as the days here in Kropmork-Nahk came to a winding close; nearly all of the mechanic's previous sentiments seem to have been thrown overboard for he realized this was no place for soldiers to be at. What is the point of this grand ball besides to make a fake alliance with people who will loathe you no matter what?
"We are different from them..." Kiros grumbled, still not very comfortable with the idea of eating any of the food on the silver platters. Yet, we are all the same if you really think about it." The pirates of the 4423 looked no different in his opinion from the soldiers of the Victoria II. Both parties had bright and intelligent men and women filling both their ranks, some of them cheerful and bright while others where bizarre and odd in speech and dress. Both the Victoria's crew and the 4423's bandits were so similar but yet so different in purpose.
"At least now once this is over we will have no reason to return to Kropmork for awhile." Kiros thought, glad to put some distance between himself and this horrible island.

There was another grunt as the boatswain massaged his temples a bit wearily, clearly frustrated by this. "Tch. No comment about that." He certainly wasn't going to mention about Toshizou and the 4423. There was already enough worry and annoyance on his mind as there already was - and he certainly didn't need to go on and add onto all that mental stress.
"...I suppose," he replied after a long while to the mechanic's last comment. He for one was rather glad to be able to get away from this cesspool after all of this bullshit was over and done with.
