On route to the infirmary? unsoundmind March 1 2011, 05:48:46 UTC
Given that Hojo generally kept himself to himself and didn't go looking for the company of officers, he hadn't had much contact with Deanna Troi. He'd kept it to a minimum, really, though he couldn't say that it was deliberate on his part. He just tended to flit between his quarters and the infirmary, with infrequent stops between to obtain necessary things, like food, and a lifestyle of that nature didn't really give itself to meeting new people.

Usually.

Having finished terrorizing the poor helpless staff of inspecting the main records room, Deanna was moving on to the next target of her rounds.

She did not rush or walk quickly- Deanna Troi did nothing in a hurry. She strode through the halls leisurely, as if she owned them. Her head was held high, her shoulders back.

Coming close to her next target, she smiled. Well here was a new face. How lovely. "Good morning, doctor."

Professor Hojo regarded the woman with a flat, bland look that, due to the crow's feet at the corners of his eyes and the lines on his forehead born of thirty years of near-constant scowling, looked as though it was bordering on contempt. It was nothing personal -- he always looked like that.

"Is it?" He replied, looking around himself at the corridor.

Well, it didn't look particularly good to him.

Well that was a bit refreshing. So far on this ship she'd only encountered sycophantic military people and too-eager-to-please crewmembers who seemed content to spend half the day talking about nothing. Here, then, was a man after her own heart- direct and to the point. Two could play at that game. Crossing her arms, Deanna smirked at him.

"Enough of the mindless exchanging of pleasantries, then. I failed to receive your report on the status of yourself and the infirmary during the recent monster attacks. This needs to be rectified."

"If you desire reports," he said, dropping his head forward slightly so that he could regard her over the tops of the frames of his glasses, "You know where the infirmary is. Feel free to come and get them when you see fit."

He didn't go out of his way to sound confrontational, but there was something in the way he moved, and spoke, that suggested that he disliked answering to people and had been in a position of power in the past and was very much used to it.

"I am a doctor, not a secretary. Either employ somebody to ferry pieces of paper back and forth, or make time in your own schedule to do so yourself."

Deanna was well accustomed to people either looking down at her or attempting to dismiss her outright. Fortunately, she was not a woman easily cowed. She, too, was used to being in a position of power. "Part of your job as a doctor is to see to it that reports are correctly filed with the record keepers. Part of my job as Quartermaster is to maintain order by attending to detail."

Her voice and face were calm, but there was an icy glare in her eyes, and tell-tale lines on her face that indicated an almost permanent feeling of deadly rage at the world. It really wasn't anything against Hojo; she was always like this. "Disciplinary action has been far too lax on this ship, I see. Any failure in your duties will be viewed as an infraction, doctor. It is your responsibility, not mine, to see that it does not happen again."

"I beg to differ. My job as a doctor is extremely clean-cut -- I perform medical procedures and administer medication to those on this ship that require it and keep files for my own use. I suggest, if you require copies of these in the records room, that you employ somebody to deal with this job, or tell the record keepers themselves to come and get them. Chasing up and keeping copies of infirmary records is their job, Miss Troi, not mine," he said mildly. "I am a busy man. Too busy, indeed, to be walking halfway across the ship with pieces of paper best kept to the relevant location -- that being in the infirmary and within easy reach of those who need to utilise them."

He didn't see the point in submitting ongoing records to the Record Keepers. If they wanted a copy, they were free to go and get them -- it wasn't as though they did much else. Information important to the medical staff should, indeed, be kept in an accessible filing cabinet within the infirmary.

"I'm sure the enforcement of pointless protocol concerning my files ( ... )

She leveled a glare at him, knowing the effect would probably be lost, but she saw no reason to let him at ll think he was intimidating. "I will keep that in mind should I encounter any pointless protocol. As it is, I expect to have regular updates from all areas of the ship, including the infirmary. Commit to paper and keep it here if you wish."

However, he did have a point, albeit a small one. Not, of course, that would say so in so many words. Deanna herself was very new to being a Quartermaster and overseeing ship function. She sighed. "We are all busy people. If it is so vital that you not deliver them yourself, I will see about assigning the obviously necessary middle party. Or send it to me over the network. I don't particularly care, so long as I am kept informed."

At least he seemed to be a fairly competent doctor. Few truly incompetent people were so stubborn. "Just see that it gets done."

"I keep up to date records of every patient I deal with in the infirmary," he told her. It was one of the few dutiful things he did. "I trust the other doctors do the same. If that is not the case, take it up with them."

He was a scientist before a doctor in his mind, but he had been a doctor first. He was more than used to keeping records in both professions, and it wouldn't be a problem to continue doing so.

"I will not, however, be sending you anything over the network," he said, arching an eyebrow. "It is not fully secure and patient confidentiality is important. That, of course, is another reason why the Records are kept in our workplace and not the record room. I'm sure you understand."

"I trust your records also include patient's past history?" Demihuman registration was what she was really after, but that most certainly wasn't Hojo's job, so she refrained from mentioning it.

At mention of the network, she smiled, arching an eyebrow right back. "Of course I understand. Nor would I expect you to do anything to compromise your code of ethics." It was test. So many things were, with Deanna. Judging the character of her crewmates was extremely important- her expertise, in fact. She had thus far neglected to visit the thoughts of Professor Hojo. His emotions were enough.

"Yes," he said, regarding the question of the patients' histories. "If they are available, at least."

His code of ethics was considerably sketchier than his following of necessary rules. He didn't care much for being ethical, or for the privacy of patients, but if it got him into any trouble, or lost him a steady job where he had enough free time to do his own thing, he was not about to risk it. And, vile though he is, Reial's version of the Hippocratic Oath should probably be adhered to regardless.

Although she didn't mention Demihuman registration, it was what he was after also. Being a doctor gave him access to those files which showed those who exhibited demihuman traits, even if they were not visible upon first glance. To a scientist, this was an invaluable resource.

She nodded. "Very good. I shall not review those, of course, as it would be a breach of personal information. I shall simply have to trust to your and the other doctor's discretion as to what information is in your reports." She was not overly happy about that, as more information on possible Targets was always useful when undergoing Interrogations... but she had to remind herself that she was not herself here, and had to at least appear to do things in the way a normal quartermaster would.

Out of mere curiosity only, she tuned her abilities to Hojo's mind, wondering what thoughts were currently going through it.

Hojo, in short, was thinking in brief annoyed blasts. Mostly concerning why this woman would be so interested in medical records -- none of the other quartermasters had ever bothered.

He also couldn't help but think that he would have rather not been disturbed on his way to the Infirmary. It was most inconvenient. A major downside of being downgraded to a ship's doctor after what he was used to.

She had fortunately been prepared for the blasts of annoyance, otherwise they may well have given her a headache bad enough to last for the rest of the day. Powerful bursts of emotional thought could do that to her. But Deanna knew enough to be aware that Hojo was annoyed even without reading his thoughts. He seemed to exist in that state constantly.

At that last thought, she made a note to check his record more thoroughly to determine what it was he had done before coming aboard. Backing away from his thoughts, she smiled at him, not entirely unpleasantly.

"Thank you for your understanding in this matter, Doctor. I hope we can quickly discover a working relationship which will benefit us both." If there was a little too much 'friendliness' in her tone... well... that could just be how Deanna worked.

He narrowed his eyes, but nodded curtly.

He had no interest in a working relationship with anybody, unless it was of the type where he worked and everybody left him alone except to marvel at the fact that he was amazing at every scientific or medical project he laid his hands on.

"Indeed," was his noncommital answer.

s'okay. I think we can wrap this one up unless you can think of anything else? illhaveyourmind March 20 2011, 03:31:37 UTC
Smiling, Deanna inclined her head, almost but not quite respectfully. "In that case, I'll leave you on your way. I do have other matters that require attention. Unless there was anything you needed from me?"

It would be hard to tell if she wanted him to say anything or not. She could be rather hard to read sometimes. Not often, but sometimes.
