Justin made it a point to spend most of each day in the Records Room, even if there wasn't always enough to do to fill up that much time. The days with a sudden inrush of paperwork, frequently coinciding with shore leave for everyone else, made up for the usually slow pace of the job. In any case, he had plenty of his own (well, Ari's) work, which wasn't easily distinguishable from the ship's paperwork to anyone who walked in. He worked on that in the Records Room instead of his own cabin, wanting to be available in case anyone needed anything ( ... )

He had enough time to get settled into the ship. Now it was time to get settled into his new work. In a way, Edgeworth actually looked forward to it. He had done practically nothing in these past few months, and he despised it. What he needed now, most of all, was something to keep his mind off of what happened.

Now it was time to meet his new coworker. He raised his fist and gave a sharp knock against the door.

"Come in!" he called out automatically. It wasn't a private room, people weren't required to knock in any case, and he wasn't in the habit of making anyone wait at the door.

His main job, however, wasn't dealing with visitors, so he didn't bother getting up from his current position on the floor with a pile of papers in his lap until he saw it was someone who did require his immediate attention, not just one of the crewmembers with a question or Ulquiorra coming by to check on him.

Seeing the stranger, he got up, leaving the papers on the floor to finish dealing with later, and made his way to the door. He took in his appearance with a glance - the missing arm, the tension, a bit of impatience - but his reaction was no more than would be expected in an encounter with someone new.

"Hello. I'm Justin Walker," not his real name, but he was used to it enough that it might as well be, "the current record-keeper. Would you be my new co-worker?"

Edgeworth nodded, and in a crisp, even tone, said, "That I am. Miles Edgeworth, at your service."

At that, he offered his good hand to shake. In a moment he'd look around and make his own judgments on his new surroundings, but for now, he still had to take care of introductions.

He shook his hand, taking care not to give any appearance of treating him as fragile. He was good at taking cues. He didn't quite manage to suppress a slight widening of his eyes at the man's name despite having known it already - but he was not going to say anything.

"Pleased to meet you." A year ago, he would have automatically added 'sir' with someone older than him and with that manner, but he'd managed to get over the habit. They were just coworkers.

Edgeworth shook back, his grip firm and strong. It wasn't too tight, though, nor did it linger for too long, and soon his hand was back at his side. So far, Edgeworth was impressed by the younger man's professional demeanor, but Walker's brief moment of surprise didn't escape his notice. Edgeworth's eyes narrowed for a moment in return, but he likewise said nothing. If Walker had any questions, he would answer them honestly, but he was in no hurry to talk about himself.

"And you as well, Mister Walker," he replied, his tone not unfriendly. "How long have you been the record keeper here?"
