Characters: Anyone on the Amestris Content: Monsters are running all over the ship! Where did they come from? Setting: All over the Amestris Time: Late at night Warnings: Monsters and fighting
She remembered the things she'd only heard happened to other people. Being ignored more than usual, avoided, pushed around. Some people had even tried to steal her hat full of money. People had done that before, of course -- she was a street performer, it was part of that -- but not this much. Then there had been what she'd heard on the network. Everyone seemed to agree that it was because her ears had changed and she'd sprouted a tail. She loved being like this, but... maybe, she thought, she should go back to normal.
When the emergency message woke her up, she left the still-sleeping An-nin in her room and began wandering the halls in search of monsters. The sleepy little girl hadn't even noticed that her ears were human, nor the lack of a tail swishing behind her.
Isa was sorry. Isa was really, really sorry, he didn't mean it, and he certainly hadn't wanted this.
The first thing he'd thought when the emergency message had sounded had been the entirely irrational, 'Did I do that?'
Now he was a bit more awake, and dressed, and clutching his new claymore while really hoping that he didn't run into anything. But he had to make sure that Lea was all right and hadn't run into anything, because no matter how irrational it might be, Isa knew he'd feel guilty if Lea got hurt.
He'd have preferred that Lea not know about the sword, or the training he'd had, but this kind of thing was exactly what he'd done it all for, so he'd have to suck it up and deal with any potential mocking that might come afterwards.
He made his way slowly down the corridor, hoping to hear any monsters before they saw him so he could avoid them altogether, when he spotted Bu-Ling.
"You should go back to your room," he said, before he noticed anything else.
"Keep your voice down," Isa replied, frowning. The last thing they needed was Bu-Ling's voice attracting any attention.
The last part registered, and he looked at Bu-Ling flatly. "You're too little, and they're dangerous. Don't fight them. Let the grown ups deal with it."
Isa did not, by that, mean the likes of himself. He didn't intend on dealing with it, he just intended on making sure Lea was okay and not off doing something stupid, like going to make sure Isa was okay, or worse, going to see if he could see the monsters.
Bu-ling made a face. "The grownups said that about the bombs, and Bu-ling went anyway and found one, and then Leo-oniichan got rid of it, and that's how come Leo-oniichan got the pr... pro... better job no da! And the grownups said not to fight the ghosts in Antrim, and Bu-ling did and got magic and the cool ears and tail! So Bu-ling is gonna fight the monsters here, too."
"So now you want a cool scar to go with them?" Isa asked. He liked Bu-Ling, but she was, well... weird. And apparently stubborn. "You'll get killed." He said.
Then he stopped, and look at Bu-Ling a little harder. "Where are your ears and tail, anyway?"
"Bu-ling wants to be an awesome hero and help people," she replied. "But a cool scar would be nice, too. And Bu-ling's not gonna die!"
She blinked. "Huh?" Her hands went up to her ears and patted them. She blinked a few times when she recognized their old shape. "Where'd they go? They were there when Bu-ling went to sleep."
"Well they're not there now," Isa said, needlessly. He wanted to get out of the corridor, or at least get moving properly again. Lingering was probably a bad idea.
"So let's get out of the way, and we can try and figure out what happened when we're somewhere safer, okay?" He tried, though he wasn't sure what results he'd get.
The little girl took her hands down from her ears. "Okay! Let's-- heeeeeeey, wait, Bu-ling's gonna fight monsters. You can't fight monsters where it's safe."
Isa heard the creak, and looked towards it, internally horrified, but determined not to show that he was scared. Worried was a different matter. He was cool with showing he was worried.
"Your ears and tail are gone; you don't even know if you can fight the monsters," he pointed out, in an urgent whisper.
"Bu-ling can fight anyway no da!", Bu-ling announced with a wide smile. "Bu-ling has always been able to fight. It has nothing to do with magic or anything like that. It's about hard work and guts nano da!"
Isa forgot his cool, detached persona for a moment and stared at Bu-Ling in disbelieving horror. It was hard to believe he'd actually, genuinely heard those words from someone.
"If we ever meet up with the Convoy again, I have got to introduce you to Ulquiorra," he muttered. "This isn't like in comics. Good guys die too. Even six year old ones." Getting the age wrong wasn't deliberate, but he did.
The creak got closer, and Isa stared in its direction, holding his sword up the way he'd been taught and starting to make his way back, away from the source.
"Guts are no good to anyone if they're splattered across the scenery. Come on."
"Bu-ling's not gonna die, and Bu-ling's nine!" The little girl turned in the direction of the sound and shifted her position, one arm out and the other back, ready for whatever was coming.
Something stepped around the corner, scratching the floorboards. One of the lamps on the wall revealed a creeping thing that looked quite like a rat and would probably be a rat were it not pink, bearing multiple sets of eyes, and large enough to take up the entire hallway. Upon seeing it, Bu-ling's face lit up.
"A monster, a real monster!" She ran forward and sprung into a spinning kick at it. "Bu-ling's gonna prove how strong she is no da!"
You have got to be kidding, Isa thought. It wasn't just the weird, not-really-a-rat thing, it was Bu-Ling too. Were all little kids this dumb?
He snatched forward to try and grab Bu-Ling, and stop her running for the monster, but he missed, and grimaced as he quickly took up his position with his sword again, hoping for the best. He was still creeping steadily backward, but he knew he wouldn't be able to outrun the monster, and turning his back on it to do so sounded like a bad idea.
Bu-ling's kick landed, but the pink rat (pink rat, seriously?) shrugged her off, tossing her to the side. She ducked and tumbled to the ground, rolling up to spring back up to her feet. The monster blinked with its four sets of eyes and began to sniff towards a spot of light shining off of Isa's sword.
Isa realised he read too many comic books; he'd almost expected that to work.
"You okay?" He asked, taking a careful step slowly backwards as the monster's attention turned to him, and his sword. He raised it slowly, too, ready to strike if the monster moved towards him, or Bu-ling.

Something creaked at the end of the hall.

This was, of course, not whispered.
