Urist McPainter (fun fact: Urist means "dagger" in Dwarven) tidesnpc January 18 2011, 05:51:08 UTC
Over on one side of the gallery stood a short and plump little demihuman who looked like he was half beard. He was wearing drab brown clothing, made from plants that grew only underground and he carried a large steel hammer over one shoulder. While everything about him screamed "not artist," this man was one of the featured painters in the gallery.

Which was odd, considering that he had little to no respect for proper gallery conduct.

"You there!" he called to people who passed by in a loud, booming voice. "Come look at these beauties!" He would then gesture to the row of paintings beside him, all of them of blocky monsters and humans locked in combat. There was a simple, primitive appeal to them. Some people would stop to look, and others would merely walk past, to which he would shout, "Can't appreciate good art, can ye? Well, maybe you'll appreciate me hammer in yer skull!"

At that point, security came rushing over and promptly snatched the hammer out of his hands. They had let him take the weapon in at the first place since he was one of the artists, but that was clearly a mistake.

"Give that back!" the demihuman hollered. "Those people need to be taught a lesson for not appreciating Urist McPainter originals!"

How could anyone expect him to enjoy fine art when ruckuses were being made?

One fellow seemed to be the center of all of it. Aileru knew this because said fellow was shouting. "Sir, Sir! Some of us are trying to enjoy the exhibition," he approached the man and said to him decisively.

Urist paused, staring at the stranger for a few moments. What...what gall! He stomped furiously towards Aileru and raised a fist to swing his hammer. However, he was lacking said hammer, as it was confiscated just moments before.

"Trying to enjoy the exhibition?" he snarled. "Trying to enjoy the exhibition!?" He took a deep breath and puffed out his chest. "Listen here, laddie, I am the exhibition!"

Not feeling especially threatened, Aileru gave the short man a crooked look. "No, I don't think so."

He was about this close from launching himself at Aileru. Instead, he held himself back.

"You best be careful; bad things happen to people who don't appreciate true art," Urist warned.

"I completely agree," the magician said with a nod. "So if you wouldn't mind removing yourself or quieting down, it would seem to be in your better interest."

Why that little...! Urist took a step forward, but security gave him a look that clearly said that they didn't care that he was one of the featured artists: they would throw him out if they wanted to. Instead, he stormed to the other end of his row of paintings, muttering something that sounded like "you'll get yours."

Aileru had already stopped paying attention. He didn't notice any more distracting noises, and that could only mean that his mission was a success! It was with a feeling of satisfaction that he took some long, last looks at a few of the paintings that stood out, before moving on to another area of the exhibit.

Mr. H chuckled. Now this was his kind of art scene. With a good natured laugh, he gave the man a wink

"Now, now. I'm sure god will get them for that. So why don't you tell me about yer paintings?"

That seemed to make Urist calm down immediately. Finally! Someone who got it!

"My paintings are all about the struggle between man and beast," he said, gesturing once again to the row of paintings on the wall. "Locked in combat, where only one will walk away with the glory! 'Tis the greatest expression of life, I say."

The man chuckled again. "Ahhh, I know what ya mean. Or at least I know someone, that would know what ya mean."

The graffiti artist gave one of the more abstract ones a hard look. He was digging the style.

"Hrm, how much would place on one of these things?"

At that question, Urist stopped. He had absolutely no idea how much his paintings were worth. How much did a painting go for these days? Ten barrels of ale?

"Never 'ad them appraised," he said. "But maybe after this I could get one of them art blokes to take a look at 'em."

Entering the scene in his usual Heroic! fashion, Othar arrived just in time to witness the cruel, unjust removal of the short painter's hammer. He nodded his head sympathetically.

"How horrid- to have the tool of your trade so unfairly taken from your hands! I, too, was forced to leave my hammers with the security officers. Most distressing! I'm sure you know exactly how a hammer can become useful at such an event!"

The sympathetic stranger was just what Urist needed.

"Oh, absolutely!" the short demihuman said. "A hammer is useful in all occasions, but especially at events like these!" Why, when his hammer was present, Urist had a lot more people commenting on his work, and lots of glowing praise! "Me poor Bessie...those oafs better treat her well!"

"I could not agree more!" Othar beamed his largest and most Heroic!smile at the short man. Then he turned to look at the man's paintings, removing his visor to get a closer look.

"Quite a focus on monsters, I see. Have you fought many?" It was in Othar's professional interests as a Gentleman Adventurer to know how many monsters were in what areas, after all.

"Indeed I have!" he said, his anger now replaced with bold pride. While his face was covered mostly with his impressive facial hair, his mustache bristled that hinted at a potential smile underneath. "Best way any man, woman, and child can prove themselves, in my mind."
