Bumblebee honestly had no functional use for the ship's kitchen, being wholly unable to consume anything there. Still, the process of combining organic materials, with or without then subjecting the mixture to heat of one kind or another - and there were so many!...boiling, baking, frying - was endlessly fascinating to him. That fascination led him to the kitchen now and then just to see what the cooks were up to and enjoy the smells wafting from whatever they were doing.

He paused at the sight of a new face. ...oh, right. He'd heard they had a new cook. Well . . . time to approach him! Just as he did with everyone. It was his duty to make sure everyone on board knew about the captain, and no to share that secret with anyone. It applied to him too, of course, but nothing, not even his own safety, came before that of his commander.

Loathe to interrupt the human's work, the four-foot scout waited until he was noticed before speaking, knocking softly on the door jamb if it seemed like that might be a while. Once he had the man's attention, he offered a grin and small wave. "Hi there."

Well. If there was one thing on Reial Watanuki had not been expecting to see.

He froze for a second when he turned around at the sound of knocking (people on this ship knocked? Really?)-- either someone had just left their large toy automaton here and run away, or it had just--

Oh.

He remember his manners when Bumblebee spoke. Startling though he may have been, it was just rude to leave him hanging. Even if he hadn't concealed his open staring very well. "Er-- hello!" he said, backing out of the cupboard completely and finding his way to his feet. "Sorry! I was just-- I mean, I heard you, I'm just-- I, er-- have we been introduced?"

No, he didn't think they had. He would have remembered this.

Bumblebee was pretty sure the human would have remembered too.

The little scout couldn't help but laugh, tossing up his hands good-naturedly. "No, I'm probably the one who should be apologizing. I know I'm . . . um, unusual. To put it mildly. And no, we haven't. I'm called Bumblebee." He stepped forward with the last, offering his hand. Watanuki would find the metal a bit pliant and surprisingly warm - not by much, just noticeably above room temperature.

Watanuki took the proffered hand-- and he was surprised at the warmth of it. He'd spoken with the captain a few times but had never had cause to touch one of his... kind before. "I'm Kimihiro Watanuki. It's a pleasure. I'm very sorry-- I didn't mean to be rude." Bumblebee was unusual, sure, but who was he to judge what was unusual? The magitech eye screwed to his face and the ring on his finger spoke for his own differences clearly enough.

The ring . . . actually didn't mean anything to the Cybertronian. Commitments such as spark-bonding were (once upon a time) visually expressed in other ways. The two-tone eyes got notice, but the little scout had once seen a cat with two-toned eyes, so . . . He thought he could scan some kind of faint energy reading, too . . . but that could have been anything. And so long as it didn't threaten the ship, he wasn't going to worry about it.

"Haha, don't worry about it, Mr. Watanuki. You weren't rude ta all, believe me." People trying to capture or kill him for what he was . . . that was rude. Initial, honest surprise could hardly be taken for a blamable offense. "So . . . how are you liking the ship, so far?"

Relieved both that this person was not offended by his surprise, and that he was not trying to raid the larders, Watanuki gave him a friendly smile. "I'm very much enjoying it so far, really. I know a few of the people here from a ship I used to work on. Once I get the inventories finished, things will be running smoothly here." He paused. "Er-- what exactly do you do on the ship, Mister Bumblebee?" He wasn't sure what title you used for an automaton of any gender; he hoped he hadn't transgressed some robot social norm.

The little scout chuckled, waving a hand. "Oh, no 'mister'. Just 'Bumblebee's' fine." His head tilted a bit, optics dimming almost imperceptibly in a way that somehow seemed to convey a a faint sadness or longing, though his voice remained chipper enough. "Some of the crew are old shipmates, huh? I'll bet that's nice. Must have helped make that transition easier. Anyway, I'm one of the radio operators, plus odd jobs for Optimus now and then as he needs me. You've . . . met the captain by now, right? Optimus Prime?"

The look on Watanuki's face said that he had even before he opened his mouth. "...Yes. I've met him. It was... er... eye-opening." Optimus Prime was, without a doubt, the strangest thing he'd ever seen; and seeing as before meeting him this position had been held by watching his own eye be devoured by a vengeful spider monster, this was saying something. "I... really can't say I've met anyone like him before." It occurred to him that Bumblebee might be the same kind of... person as the captain; but this seemed rude to ask.

A dubious honor, in that case. Even a Cybertronian would find it strange (and be at least a little freaked at) the sight of someone devouring a body part, especially one of their own.

Not at all easily offended, the scout merely nodded. "Our kind have never been seen on your continent, not before me and Optimus. We're Cybertronians, from an ancient continent called Cybertron." He frowned at a thought. "You've . . . probably heard about some of the recent trouble we had about two months back? The capture of our ship and our, um, 'borrowing' a museum ship from Kropmork to get her back?"

"Er..." Wait, that had been this ship? "Y-yes. I... heard a little bit about that. I didn't follow it too closely, though... What did it have to do with--?"

This was a difficult series of revelations to have to deal with in quite a short time. He might be forgiven for being unable to keep up with it all.
