Milk's plan was perfect. Honed over years spent dodging the Kitchen Tyrant's wrath; tested under lesser, more lenient cooks in his absence; absolutely guaranteed to net her the baking chocolate at the front of the third shelf in the pantry by the door.

She had popped into her original form, grabbed an innocuous-looking box that was just her size, and slipped into the kitchen, stopping whenever she heard any sign of movement. Nothing to see here. Just a box of peaches. Really.

She was forgetting that in a Watanuki-run kitchen, boxes were not left on the floor. Ever. When Watanuki turned and saw it, his eyes narrowed in suspicion - either someone had already been here and he had somehow missed them, or...

He stalked over to the box, and picked it up in one decisive motion. "...I should have known."

"Miru!" Deprived of her hiding spot, Milk made a break for it in the direction of the pantry. "You ruined my perfect plan ~miru!"

Watanuki lunged forward, ending up sprawled full-length on the floor but with a hand around Milk's foot. "Don't you go near that pantry! You think I wouldn't see through that?!"

Milk tripped, faceplanted, and proceeded to wriggle and flail in his grasp. "Let me go ~miru! I wouldn't have to resort to this kind of thing if you weren't so stingy with the food ~miru!"

Watanuki held on tight, thinking that Milk was too damn strong for her size. It was like dealing with an even shriller Mokona. "Lunch is in an hour!" he snapped. "You couldn't wait an hour? That's not me being stingy, that's you being insufferable!"

Milk kicked and tried to wrest her tiny foot from out of his hand. "No, that's you being too picky about the kitchen like always ~miru!"

Watanuki hung on doggedly. "If people would stop sneaking in, I wouldn't need to be picky! And I'm not letting go until you promise you're not going to steal anything! I can always pick you up and throw you out!"

No, he wouldn't really, but heaven willing the threat would be enough. He and his wishful thinking.

"No way ~miru! Let go!" Milk flailed and, in a puff of smoke, transformed back to Kurumi.

And thus did Watanuki find himself lying flat on the kitchen floor, one hand clamped around Kurumi's ankle. It took him a second to realize what had happened; and by the time the smoke had cleared, he had leaped to his feet and was angrily brushing himself off.

"Can you not warn people before you do that?!" he demanded, waving the residual smoke out of his eyes with one hand.

"You weren't letting go of me," Kurumi snapped. She pulled herself to her feet and began to brush off her dress. "Warning you would have been counterproductive."

"Well? Is that all you came for?" Watanuki demanded. "Or are you going to make another attempt before you leave? Since you've invaded, you might as well tell me what you're here for!"

"Invaded!?" She made a face. "Come on! You always act like the kitchen is such serious business! It's just food."

Oh, no. She'd said it.

"IT IS NOT JUST FOOD." Watanuki stabbed an outraged finger at her. "It might just be food to you! But do you understand how much work goes into making it?! Can you fathom the sweat and blood that goes into cooking just one meal for an entire ship?! NO! It's like feeding an army! An army of ungrateful cretins who will always find a way to hate whatever you make! It is the world's most thankless task, and you should be groveling because I feed you, not whining over a few missed snacks!"

"Stop blowing things out of proportion!" Kurumi pointed her own finger right back in his face. "You're acting like everything's way more serious than it is! Nobody in the world could hate your food, stupid! We just hate that you're crazy!"

That made him hesitate a second. But only because he swore he'd heard some kind of compliment in there somewhere before it was swallowed up by general high-pitched griping, and this, combined with the strange, seemingly random outbursts of good feeling from Kurumi in the past few weeks, was enough to shut him up for a good three seconds.

He rallied quickly, however. "...Well-- I'm not crazy!" he snapped, rather lamely. "Show you like my food by eating when I make it, not between meals!"
