There was trouble in the Badlands, but there was nothing to fear. Why, in this very household, the most brilliant minds in Ivona were gathered to discuss strategy and to decide what course the nation would take. Miles listened intently and paid rapt attention to every word he could get ahold of.
...of course, they didn't know that. After all, he was but a boy, and was still new to the von Karma household. However, that didn't mean that he couldn't learn. So, Miles stood outside of the door to von Karma's sitting room, ear pressed against the heavy oak door.
Then the conversation hushed and quieted. Miles furrowed his brow and tried to puzzle out just happened; all he could make out was the scrape of chairs, until someone cleared his throat.
"I believe this meeting is adjourned..."
Miles froze and his throat tightened with panic. He couldn't be caught out here! If von Karma caught him, he'd flay him alive ...or worse. Miles gulped and scrambled away from the room as quickly as he could. The door opened and officers swarmed out and last minute disagreements were whispered in harsh tones, but Miles pretended not to notice any of it. Instead, he walked away slowly. Casually. Naturally. Of course, he didn't ignore them; as soon as the first officer passed by, he carefully stepped out of their way, and kept his had bowed in respect.
Any hopes that this plan had worked were dashed as soon as von Karma passed by. The man was just about to walk by completely, but instead he stopped right next to him. His pause was brief, but it was just long enough to fix Miles with a stern look. Miles knew that look. It was the "we're going to have a talk later, boy" look. Miles groaned as soon as von Karma had passed by completely and soon forgot about the other attendees.
