"Ice cream! Ken-chan's buyin' me ice cream!"

Seven years old or not, Yachiru was still clinging to Kenpachi's back. She was small enough, and it's not like her barely fortyish pounds were going to kill Kenpachi's back. "An' can we get rice balls an' candy?"

He didn't mind her clinging--he'd rather she stayed close after the last time she got lost. He chuckled at her request. "Rice balls, yeah. Candy, we'll see. Just a little bit, probably." He did want her to sleep tonight, after all. There was a stall that sold rice balls now, actually...

Yachiru grinned and climbed up so she was more or less perching on Kenpachi's shoulder. "An' we c'n get some of Ken-chan's sake!" she added. "Then we'll both be happy!"

"Sounds good ta me!" He headed to the stand where he bought some riceballs and sake from a very, very nervous shopkeeper and then went to sit down on a dirty bench nearby. He unwrapped a couple and handed them to Yachiru.

It sure was good to be like this again--back with her and just the two of them. Even if it had been months since he found her again, he still wasn't going to take it for granted.

With a grin, Yachiru took the rice balls and slid down into Kenpachi's lap. "Ken-chan, Pinky-chan's teachin' me t'read!" she announced through a mouthful of rice. "An' t'write!"

"'At's good," he said through his own mouthful. "Ya can read 'n write jus' like a big girl. An I'll teach ya how ta fight all the pansies and baddies wit' yer sword." He ruffled her hair gently (relatively speaking). "What's she taught ya so far?"

"Well, I know blood, candy, Yachiru, Kenpachi, Ken-chan, cookie, an' sword," she said. "Taught m'self those! She hasn' taught me nothin' new yet, though."

"Well, you'll have ta show me when ya learn more stuff," he said good-naturedly as he continued to munch on one of the riceballs and watching the crowd go by. For some reason, the passersby seemed to give him and Yachiru a wide berth.

The crowd's behavior didn't faze Yachiru, who happily munched on the rice balls. "'Ey, Ken-chan, can you read?" she asked.

"Enough ta get by," he said. "Ain't gonna be winnin' any competitions for it, though." He swallowed the bite in his mouth. "Ya might have been too young to remember, but when I found you, I showed ya how to write yer name. Used a stick to write on the ground."

"Really?" Yachiru looked up at Kenpachi. "I don' remember! Tell me more, Ken-chan!"

He sat back and looked up at the sky (or what he could see of it). "Well, I was passin' through Kusajishi, or at least passin' by it. Settled down fer a rest, and some bandits thought they could steal some stuff from me. They were wrong of course, an' it wasn't even much of a fight. I was just sittin' back--hadn't even put my sword away yet--when ya came crawlin out. Ya weren't scared at all, just put yer hand right on my sword and played in the blood.

Well, figured if ya weren't scared of that, I should keep ya. An' if I was gonna keep ya, we were both gonna need names ta call each other by." It's not the kind of thing he talked about, but he still remembered how horrible it was to be nameless--and how much of a difference having a name and someone to call it made. He ruffled Yachiru's hair again. "So, I named ya Yachiru an' me Zaraki. I took a stick an wrote our names in the dirt an' said them for ya."

"Where did Kenpachi come from, huh?" demanded Yachiru. "An' where'dja get Yachiru?"

"Kenpachi was a title they used ta use in the Badlands for the strongest warrior who could kill the most demons. Means that I have the strength of eight swords!" he said proudly.

"As ta Yachiru..." he sighed a little, and maybe sounded a little sad. "That was the name of the teacher who taught me ta fight."

"Really?" Yachiru gasped. She hadn't known her name was so important! "Did she have pink hair, too, Ken-chan?"

"Nah, black hair. Never saw anyone with pink hair before I met ya, Yachi." He took a gulp of the sake. "She was tough. Tough as me."
