While Ulquiorra tended to like knowing where he was going, travelling aimlessly had its charms. It helped, of course, that the company wasn't objectionable. The varying terrains and the potential for sight seeing in unfamiliar towns might have excited some people, but it passed Ulquiorra by almost completely.

He wasn't out to take in the sights. He was there, with Justin, to keep him safe from whatever the world could throw at them and, given the nature of the world, the list of potential dangers was rather a long one.

They hadn't tended to stay in each location for very long and if they did discover the need to linger for more than a day or two in one city, they'd avoided the populated areas. Ulquiorra hadn't asked why or why their movements required secrecy, but he'd obeyed the request as diligently as could be expected. He was, after all, very good at taking orders.

He was also good at travelling. From his days as a sword-for-hire, which was pretty much what he was doing for Justin but in a more bodyguard-like fashion, he had learned not only how to ride horses, but how to tack one up for both a rider and any small cargo that needed to be transported. He'd found himself surprised at the start of their time together that he had more things to carry than Justin. He had never been one for material possessions, so it was slightly strange to him to think that he had so much stuff. Still, he had sold many of his less useful books for supplies along the way, sticking with the 'essentials' of his small but informative collection of psychology books.

Currently, they were between towns. The ride was a slow one and the patchy scrubland and the overcast and rapidly darkening sky made Ulquiorra reluctant to push the horses -- there was no sense in exhausting them so early on, especially with the threat of rain looming above. The distance between Licere and Bydan was great, but they were already more than halfway there, so he wasn't too worried. Another hour or so and they'd have to find somewhere sheltered to set up camp.

"We should arrive in around three days," Ulquiorra informed his charge, adjusting himself in his saddle. Riding for long hours was uncomfortable, but his horse didn't seem to mind all that much, possibly because the weight of his books was mitigated by his own lightness. It tossed its head more frequently than Justin's, but that was pretty much just because animals in general didn't like him. "Keep your guard up."

Vohemar was full of plenty of vile monsters. They thinned out in number as you approached the desert, but until they were on their way to Trewe Ulquiorra wasn't about to drop his guard, not for a second. That said, they had been fortunate in avoiding the worst so far. Ulquiorra's dark reiatsu tended to encourage most of the common beasts give them a wide berth.
