As always, Hijikata was never one for parties, but it wasn't as if he had anywhere else to be at the moment. Everyone was at this banquet now, and as much as he would rather be not here and be somewhere else instead smoking it up and doing his own things, the samurai had to admit it would be bad form to be not present here - after all, he was one of the ship. And it wasn't as if he didn't have a reason to be not here.

Which was why he was here now, a glass of something that wasn't alcoholic in his hand as he leaned against the wall. Despite the event his two swords still hung from his side - it paid to be careful, after all; it had already been nearly two years, sure, but the events of that time all the way back at Kropmork still left a heavy impression on his mind. At least it didn't seem that anything like that would happen anytime soon... but it still paid to be careful, regardless. Who knows what might happen now during these times. So many things had happened since then, Hijikata couldn't find himself that surprised anymore

"Oniichan!"

A small, yellow-haired girl climbed onto one of the wall decorations beside him, followed by a monkey in a top hat. She waved, hanging off of it, while eating a scone.

"What're you doing?"

The man barely flinched when the girl appeared at his side - she had been noisy enough from the beginning, and he had hoped that if he had pretended not to notice, she would have ignored him eventually. Unfortunately, it seemed that that possibility wasn't going to happen anytime soon.

He recognized that voice rather quickly too - after all, it was kind of hard to not remember such a young, childish voice.

"It's Hijikata," the boatswain responded automatically, wishing now that he could whip out his cigarettes; though he had the sinking feeling it would be a bad idea if he did. Best to just play safe - and if worse came to worse, he could just go outside for a break before coming back in.

"Hijikata-oniichan," Bu-ling corrected, taking another bite out of her pastry. "Bu-ling asked what you were doing, Hijikata-oniichan. Standing around looks boring."

...she was never going to stop with that 'oniichan' thing, was she? Well, if she didn't stop then it wasn't as if he had anyway to make her stop. Just so long as she kept the 'Hijikata' in there...

The man closed his eyes and sighed out though his nose, pointedly trying to ignore the headache that seemed to appear out of nowhere. Why was it always the kids that kept coming to him? "I'm drinking," he replied, raising the glass in his hand for emphasis. "And I've done enough standing around to be not bored with it."

"Like what?" Bu-ling's monkey climbed atop her head and peered down at his drink. Neither seemed content to climb down off the wall decorations any time soon. "Standing around is boring. You should try something more fun, Hijikata-oniichan."

Pointedly ignoring the monkey (after having two cats, a dog that turned into a wolf out of nowhere and a damned rappig, animals didn't faze him so much anymore nowadays), Hijikata did his best to resist the urge to sigh as he leaned in further against the wall behind him and tucked his free hand into the pocket of his pants.

"I'm fine with not having fun." It wasn't as if he was supposed to have fun anyway in the first place.

"That makes no sense nano da!" Bu-ling hopped off the wall decoration, landing on her feet, and made an X with her arms. The monkey, still on her head, also made an X in the same way. "Life should be lots of fun. Bu-ling has fun even while working!"

In another time and place the man might fund himself amused at the stereo between the kid and her pet monkey, but for now the man could just care less. Sipping at his glass, Hijikata gave the girl a look as he shifted himself slightly so that his legs wasn't going to turn numb or anything similar. "Your kind of work and my kind of work is different, kid, so I can't have fun."

The only exception to that was of course on his missions, but the boatswain doubted that the girl would really want to know about it.

"Are you not allowed to have fun in the army?" Bu-ling frowned. "That's dumb. If Bu-ling were in the army, Bu-ling would still do fun things. Like performing for money!"

Despite himself, the man couldn't help but snort at what the girl had said - the fact that she had said it seriously just made things all the more strangely amusing. She really was trying to be serious about this, wasn't she? He might have been annoyed, but since he had nothing better to do he might as well go with her (taking care of Chi had slowly but surely started to instil a good sense of patience within him).

"You can't perform in the military, kids," Hijikata said pointedly as he idly swirled the contents of his glass. "You have to do whatever orders you get."

"Bu-ling never said she wouldn't do orders," she said, monkey still on her head. "Bu-ling would just have fun while doing it."

All Hijikata could do was to give the girl a rather pointed look at that, expression on his face quite impossible to read.

"Even if you had to kill people while doing it?" he asked bluntly - no point beating about the bush; it was part of the job, and there was no reason to hide it at all.

Bu-ling thought about it for a moment. "That wouldn't be fun, but bad things are bad no da."

'Bad things are bad'? That was most possibly one of the understatements of the year, if Hijikata had anything to say about that. The swordsman himself had no qualms about it (it was his job, and then there was also that thing with Solare) but the circumstances for him had been... extreme, to put it mildly. Things really weren't as simple as what the girl thought.

Keeping his tone distant, the man continued. "Even if its 'bad', you still need to do it if you're in the military. It's what you need to do."

"Bu-ling knows that," she said. "Cause you gotta fight bad guys nano da! Right? So Bu-ling wouldn't be able to juggle or balance plates during that. But the rest of the time, Bu-ling bets she could do it just fine."
