MEAT SHIELD COMING THROUGH hushthenoise May 10 2010, 14:29:49 UTC
It had already been a while since Neku was onboard the ship, but it wasn't that all surprising if nobody actually knew about him save for the captain and first mate - after all, the teenager hadn't done much in his work besides brooding in the rarely-used brig. The work was always taken care of well by the others, and it wasn't like he would be of much help being there anyway - and besides, he didn't like having to be in the same area as the others.

Which was why now while everyone was busy with god-knew-what, the teenager was on his way to his usual hangout at the brig, where he could just stay there for as long as he liked with nothing but his journal and his portable radio. The brig was so rarely used, it wasn't as if nobody would ever come to bother him there.

Dojima was far too busy getting his daughter and partner settled in to be "mingling" up on the bridge. He already had a meeting set up with the first mate and captain later- what was important was making sure he and his partner touched base. Their investigation here was Dojima's top priority, but it required a level of secrecy he wasn't sure his partner could maintain.

"We have to be discreet. Nobody can know we're partners. Got it, Adachi?"

Adachi himself was leaning in closely, making sure not to miss a single one of Dojima's words. That's just what you do when you're discussing private things, right? Nothing weird about that.

"Got it, Dojima-san," he replied in a hushed voice, already working on being 'discreet' (because whispering in a secluded area is not suspicious at all). "But don't worry. I'm a natural at this kind of stuff."

Neku had been nearing the brig when he heard those voices - his portable radio hadn't been turned on yet, so he could make them out in the silence of the general area. Not their exact words, but he could tell there were two voices... both of them guys. And it seemed like they were in his usual hangout the brig. What were people doing all the way anyway? Hardly anyone came down here... and with all that whispering, Neku couldn't help but be suspicious.

One hand reaching into the pocket of his pants, the orange-headed teenager slowly made his way closer towards the source of the whispers, fingers easing around the edge of the pin that was tucked inside. He doubted that he would need it, but if they were intruders... well, then they'd know better than to mess with him when he needed his quiet.

"I don't want any of your usual slips of the tongue," Dojima continued, ignoring Adachi's (actually incredibly true, unknown to Dojima) claim at natural discretion. Adachi made a good show at listening, but was he really? Dojima just had to hope.

Adachi sighed, before continuing. "Relaaaax Dojima-san. I've got this all covered!"

"Just trust me and let me take care of everything."

Neku edged closer, surprisingly quiet enough so that he wasn't heard by the two - it was something he had picked up, being quiet; with unknown people out for his life for some reason or another, the teenager had to learn the art of stealth so that he could flee in safety when it came to it. Though he hadn't exactly thought that he would have used it for things like these.

Well, whatever. The bottom line was that these two people (whoever or whatever they were) were in his space, and anyone in his space and sounding suspicious was hardly anything good at all. He just had to be cautious and ready to defend himself if necessary.

Dojima wasn't the most attentive man; he had selective hearing and was often too exhausted from his perpetual work to keep his eyes and ears as open as he should. (Quite ironically, considering his profession demanded it of him.)

What he did have was intuition... a strange nagging sensation that often pointed him in the right direction. He went quiet suddenly and eyed the walls of the brig, touching Adachi's shoulder and moving him closer to warn and shield his younger partner with instinctive protectiveness. His hand moved to the holster at his belt, but he didn't draw. Not yet.

While Adachi was a lot smarter and better at his job than he usually let on, there were a few things that he lacked. Things you couldn't learn no matter how much you studied your ass off. They either came naturally or were gained through experience.

This intuition of Dojima's was one of those things, so he looks up in confusion over his superior's actions.

"What's wrong, Dojima-san?"

His senses started to flare much more now that the brig suddenly went quiet - he hadn't turned on his music player yet, so there was nothing that could break the silence. Neku narrowed his eyes as he tightened his grip on the pin that was in his pocket, knowing full well which one was it even if he didn't look - he had them for a good while already, and they were vital for him to defend himself; it would be bad if he couldn't tell which was which. The tingle he felt in his hand as he grabbed the pain was all the sign he needed to know.

The teenager cautiously took another step forward from where he was, magic now gathering in his hand as he prepared himself for what may come. Keeping his senses alert, Neku made sure he could go in for the first strike - he was no fighter, so having the first strike would seriously count a lot for him if it was something he did have to fight.
