A few days back, Gippal had heard something about a new gunner coming on board. Really, you just don't bother a man when he's in the middle of a mechanical project. So the information was filed away for a later date. Sure having extra hands around was damned handy, but he didn't need the particulars just that minute. Or more like, he had been too absorbed to really pay attention to what was being said. Which is how a name drop he should have noticed went entirely unnoticed.

That same obsession with all things mechanical had struck again. He woke up that morning with a brilliant idea on how to improve the guns, and skipped breakfast to get to it. And he'd stayed in with the guns, poking and prodding and adjusting things. It'd be better once he could pick up some spare parts. Next time they were in port, he'd look. He knelt down, head well into the body of one of the main guns, when he heard the sound of someone in the room. Ship was secure, so no big there.

He shoved out a hand, without looking and asked, "Hand me that wrench, will ya?"
