One question couldn't hurt, though. "Have you checked up on him at all? In case, well... you know..." She fixed her eyes on her steps as she asked.

"I haven't," he answered, turning a corner. "The captain's got him locked in his cabin under some kind of preservation charm." He stopped in front of L's door and tried the handle.
"Locked," he said. "Figures."
He hadn't told L what he was planning, and didn't intend to. Ichigo stuck his hands in his pockets and considered his next move. He could probably break in, if he had to.... He glanced at Orihime, hesitating a moment.

Her eyes darted over to him when she saw him struggle with the door. "So the captain has the key?" That was a stupid question even before she asked it. Ichigo hadn't seemed to want anyone to know why she was there, not even the captain. Finding him would be the most reasonable course even so, and she knew Ichigo knew that as well, but...
"I guess we can try to pick it, or we can break the door down. We could both do it together: give it the shoulder and maybe it'll cave right in!"

As for opening the door, Ryuzaki would understand. Probably. It'd be worth it if they got Hughes back. "I don't know the first thing about picking locks," he admitted, scratching the back of his neck. "Okay, let's try to break it down. On the count of three. One--two--
"Three!"
Ichigo kicked out, aiming for the hinges. it'd be easier to rip nails out of the wood and detach the door from the metal hinge than break the lock clean out of the doorframe. It'd probably be easier to repair, too.

She picked her way over the door and looked around the room. The captain wasn't there, thankfully: the only other person present, if you could call it a person, was a corpse with a towel covering its face and neck. Ichigo had told her how Mr. Hughes had died, but even so it was going to take her a moment to be willing to look at him. This wasn't a patient, it was almost family.

He sobered quickly, though, as Orihime approached the body. "It's not pretty," he warned her, hanging back a few feet.

Her brows had twisted in one of her transparently confused looks, and the hand that wasn't probing moved from her side to over the body to her mouth in an evolution of complete bafflement. No one could survive having their carotid severed unless they had immediate medical attention, and the state of Mr. Hughes' face was evidence enough that nothing like that had happened. At one point, he had obviously been completely dead. But she could still sense something not herself or Ichigo in the corpse right below her. It was only the slightest flickering wisp, but it wasn't a ghost, and certainly not a Hollow. She didn't know much about preservation charms, but maybe they also reversed decay a little? Maybe somehow it had been keeping him alive, or something else ( ... )

However she was going to do it, though, he hoped this worked. Ichigo desperately hoped this worked. He tried not to get his expectations too high, but he couldn't help it. For the sake of everyone on the Winding Way...for the sake of the kidnapped prisoners who would have to come home to a dead body, he hoped this worked.

She heard no response from Shuno, but could feel a reaction whose nature she couldn't sense. It was no compliance, but not a refusal either. The best "Souten Kisshun. I reject," she whispered, the volume belying the force she shoved into her command.
Out of each of her hairpins, a point of light darted and materialized into a small spirit on each side of the corpse, the space between them an aura. She could feel her spirit flowing out of her and into the fairies, but as yet the only sign of life was the life she felt in the "dead" man becoming steady.

Hughes felt his lips part and a shallow breath fill his lungs. He could feel his heart beating against his ribs, slow and steady and his chest slowly rising and falling as he started breathing again. He couldn't quite convince himself to open his eyes yet.

He braced himself for bad news, reaching out to feel for a pulse on Hughes' wrist (touching his neck would have felt wrong, somehow) and waited.
...
...
...!!!
"Inoue! Inoue, he's alive! I've got a pulse!" Ichigo cried. "Hughes! Hughes, can you hear me?!"

And then there was nothing left to heal. The man on the table was breathing and seemingly conscious, with a body as whole as if he had been formed that day.
The spirits dematerialized and flew back into her hair, and she collapsed into a half-kneeling crouch against the edge of the table, shuddering for breath and life to come back into her. She pulled herself up a few inches to look at the gentleman lying there breathing and hopefully conscious.

Hughes concentrated on getting his eyes open and was surprised when it didn't take much effort at all. His eyes blinked open and scanned the ceiling. His head lulled to the side with ease to blink at the young lady half-knelt half-leaning on the table and Ichigo standing over him. His heart for others pushed questions concerning himself out of his mind for the moment and he reached over to touch Inoue's hand as she shifted to sit up a little. "Are you all right, miss?"

Bringing someone back to life must have taken a lot out of her, he realized. It made sense that it would take a lot of magic. She'd better be okay, though. If there was a side-effect to bringing people back to life that was dangerous to her, well...Ichigo would be ticked off, to say the least.
But even with that -- Hughes was alive! It would have been impossible to describe his feelings right now. With Hughes back, Ichigo felt so much more hopeful about defeating Grita. She couldn't keep them down for long. The kids had their dad back. That daughter of his had her dad back. She wouldn't have to grow up forever missing a parent...
