"It is fortunate, then, that I keep no one close to me." Well, except Watson, a part of his brain added, the part that was just nicely getting used to a companion. But that part was still the minority. "Do you truly believe that I would hear of a conspiracy -- in my home city, no less! -- and then choose to ignore it? No, Ezio, if what you say is true, I believe I can help you." Both for the sake of Melior, and....well, truth be told, it interested Holmes. He couldn't stand to be idle, and Captain Rowe's reluctance to let him aid in the investigation of Denouement irked him. Here was a problem, one that warranted solving.
"From what you say, the group is still at large and operating. I may prove a valuable ally to you -- assuming, of course, that all you say is true." Holmes folded his arms across his chest, giving Ezio a sidelong look. "I fully intend to look into this. Now, I can do this one of two ways: with your aid, or without it. I would very much prefer the former, for I hate doing things twice and you must already have uncovered a great deal. However, should it come to it, you will find it very difficult to dissuade me from the latter."
It seemed that Holmes wasn't going to be talked out of this. Ezio did remember that it was nearly impossible to talk him into or out of anything once he got set on it.
Ezio was silent for while as he considered his options. If Sherlock was going to get involved, he'd have a much better chance of surviving with Ezio around to watch his back. Holmes was also undeniably smart, and would probably be very useful for tracking down new leads. Since he was going to go investigating with or without Ezio, the choice was a fairly easy one to make.
"Stubborn bastard," Ezio said, putting one hand on Sherlock's back and grinning at him. "We can work together on this," his grin widened as he continued, "I'll even let you copy my notes."
Ezio had spent a lot of time hurriedly copying Holmes notes back in school, and asking him to explain a lot of the more difficult concepts.
That got a chuckle out of Holmes, lightening the mood effectively. "Splendid!" he said, chuckling. Though the detective still did not trust Ezio completely, he was willing to give the man's story a chance.
After all, Holmes had reason to dislike organized crime above other kinds.
"If you've been taking notes," he added wryly, "then you truly have changed, old schoolmate. I have misjudged you." His blue eyes twinkled mischievously.
"Well..." Ezio said, a bit caught when it came to having notes. "Not the... written down kind of notes. I felt this was too dangerous to put to paper, or on these new difference engines." Ezio explained. The less permanent record there was of his illegal activities, the better.
He also hadn't changed in that regard from when they had been in school. The only papers on the matter were those Ezio had taken from his targets, and they were safely back in his room at his uncle's villa.
"I have run out of leads," Ezio informed Holmes, "I was out here investigating another group. They might not even be related, but it's the best I have right now."
"If this group is as dangerous as you say they are, that is a wise decision," Holmes replied, a bit more serious -- though he was amused that some things never changed. "But discussing this will take time, and I for one am freezing to the bone. Shall we go back inside?" he suggested, resisting the urge to hug his arms to him against the cold.
