It had been some time since he'd been called into his Commander's office to have a little chat, and Sync could only thank whatever deity was watching over him for making the confrontation so short. It wasn't like the usual meeting with Edgeworth, and it only reminded him that he had to remain on the latter's good side if he wanted to climb up the ladder for his next promotion.

He'd spent much of his day reviewing maps and logs, reciting everything in his head as he walked around in the empty corridors. The teen had decided to make his way onto the deck, stepping onto the surface while he breathed in whatever fresh air blew into his face.

Sync had been lucky to catch Arietta standing nearby, his expression remaining calm and collected as he made his way over to her.

"Arietta."

Arietta felt herself tense as she heard Sync's voice. This was not the way she normally reacted around him, but after that incident, she was a bit afraid of what he may say to her. She had done something wrong, even if she knew that boy had been trying to feed Sync to the monster. How angry was Sync with her? Did he... did he hate her now?

She couldn't bring herself to look at him after thinking that, so she continued to stare off the ship at the sky. What was he going to say? What was he going to say?

She bit her lip as her eyebrows furrowed more than usual. She couldn't even respond to him.

The first thing that tipped Sync off was the fact that Arietta didn't even respond to him. One would think of the slight possibility that she may have not heard him, but the teen knew that simply would've been an insult to the girl's honed senses if he tried to assume such a thing.

So instead of calling out to her again he took a few steps forward, lifting his hands to rest them on both of her shoulders while he spoke.

"I'm not mad."

Arietta clutched her hands tightly in front of her. She didn't have her doll again today, since people kept giving her funny looks about it. But she could really use the comfort from it right now.

Her shoulders tensed slightly as Sync rested his hands on them, even though it was a gentle touch. But when he told her that he wasn't angry she cast a glance back at him, though her face still carried a worried expression.

"Really?" she asked. She needed him to say it again. She needed confirmation that she hadn't completely ruined everything for him.

"Really." It was somewhat of a lie. There was no doubt that Sync was still frustrated about the situation, but he knew that snapping at Arietta would only make things worse. And besides, he was mature enough to know that he was also in the wrong for not telling her in advance, so pinning all the blame on her would've just been idiotic.

And... to be honest, he couldn't really stay mad at her anyway.

"I'm not mad, but I do need to teach you a few things so you won't get in trouble."

Arietta let her shoulders relax then. So, he really wasn't angry with her, even though she knew that she had still done something wrong. She would never do it again! (No matter how much she hated that guy.)

She nodded, preparing to listen to anything he told her. She needed to know more about what to do on this ship anyway. It was all so very confusing to her. She had joined just to be near Sync, but she had really thought it through that far.

"I understand! I'll do anything you say!" At the moment, she really meant it. She had already caused problems for him and she hadn't been on the ship that long at all...

At least Arietta was willing to change, making this a lot easier for Sync especially since he had a laundry list of things he needed to tell her. He doubted he'd be able to get through everything on one go, but he could probably skim through the less important details and just fill her in via journal once he had the chance.

Speaking of which.

"Arietta, do you have your journal with you?" Sync asked as he reached into his pocket for his own and flipped it open.

Arietta's eyes widened in confusion before she realized what he meant. Surprisingly enough she did have it with her, though she hated the thing. She could talk to people without having to face them, yes, but it kept making annoying beeping noises, even when she threw it against a wall. (That's where the conspicuous dent in the device's corner came from.)

She held it out to him, still unsure of what he wanted her to do with it.

Sync had to refrain from raising an eyebrow when he saw the dent on the corner of Arietta's journal, instead nodding slightly while he fiddled around with his. He had a feeling this was going to take a while, so he reached out and rested a hand on the latter's shoulder, gently pushing her down so that they were now sitting on the ground.

"I know you're not going to like this, but you have to make sure you private and filter everything you say when you use your journal. The Admiral doesn't want anything to leak to the pirates, so you have to be careful when you use it. I know it'll just make things slower, but if you need to practice you can always do it with me."

He then proceeded to actually show her how it's done, making sure to use simple terminology and carefully go over what she didn't understand. Sync had learned to grow patient over the years, especially when it dealt with Arietta.

Sync was right. Arietta didn't like it. She hated the stupid little journals. She wasn't sure why she had to use it at all if it was that much of an issue. There were some good people on it, but the rest were just like the seeing world.

For sure, she asked many questions as things went through, including things that Sync had just explained a moment before. It wasn't her fault that she didn't understand! Not that she blamed Sync's teaching. No, he could do no wrong. It was these stupid little machines that were the problem. She idly wondered if anyone would notice if she just chucked it over board.

Eventually, though, she felt she had gained a basic understanding of how the stupid thing worked. Not that she ever intended to use it again. Stupid, stupid thing.

Which led her to the question, "Why do I need to use this?" It really made no sense. Why didn't people just talk to each other?

"You don't need to use it all the time," Sync pointed out simply, though his expression remained calm while he tried to explain to the girl why the devices proved to be useful. "However, there might be times where you have to use it, like if you can't get in touch with me or anyone else you want to talk to."

Sync slowly shut his journal again, idly waving it in the air as he spoke.

"I also might need to talk to you. It might be when I'm too busy to find you, or if I wanted to get a hold of you so we could meet up. Either way, it's something you'll have to use eventually."
