Characters: von Karma and Edgeworth Content: Edgeworth's got some 'splanin' to do. Setting: von Karma's office. Time: Backdated to shortly after Rou and Roy find Edgeworth. Warnings: von Karma.
After he had been retried, Edgeworth had hoped that he would be taken to his quarters first. There he could get a change of clothes, a chance to shave and clean, an opportunity to salvage what was left of his dignity....well, it seemed like the captain had different ideas. He wanted to see him, he wanted to see him immediately, and nobody in the trio was foolish enough to say no.
So here he was, sitting in von Karma's quarters, with the heavy dread of a man about to be put to death. Edgeworth stood with his back ramrod straight, his face looking right at von Karma (faux humility would only bring more rage down on him), and he swallowed the dry lump in his throat as he waited for the captain to speak.
von Karma remained ominously silent, with no real changes to his demeanor other than a look of disgust. He had set his pen down as well, and was crossing his hands.
After what probably would feel like an eternity to Edgeworth, he finally spoke.
"Explain yourself," he said, in the barely calm tone that usually signified that he was about a second away from strangling someone.
The tone was all too familiar to Edgeworth; however, in the past, he usually heard it directed at other people. It had been some time since von Karma had used that dreadful tone with him personally. In fact, he hadn't spoken to him like this since he was a boy...
A sniveling, pathetic, fool of a boy he said to himself. Edgeworth clenched his fists together and ignored the iron lump in his stomach and the tingle of fear that ran down his back. He was a grown man, damn it, and he was going to behave as such.
"I was assaulted, sir." His voice was steady, and if not for its unnatural stiffness, it would have done a wonderful job of concealing his shaky nerves. "I was merely defending myself."
"You obviously weren't doing a very good job of it if you were caught," said von Karma, still barely keeping a handle on his temperament. "The issue isn't that it happened, it's that you were an absolute embarrassment."
