Edgeworth looked up at them, and nodded. "Thank you, Bunansa. If you have no other business, you're dismissed." After he reflected on how nice it was to see the navigator when he wasn't coated in beer or dough, he focused his attention on the newcomer.

Sub Lieutenant Gumshoe, hmn? He heard a bit about the man, or rather, how the man was passed from ship to ship more often than reports over the radio. He didn't hear of any outstanding disasters or criminal incidents, though, so it was safe to assume that Gumshoe's incompetence was more or less harmless. It didn't explain why he was transferred here, though; Edgeworth wondered idly how much the helmsman angered his last captain.

These thoughts were kept to himself, and he took the papers. He frowned at the creases, before he read over them and took out his pen. "Everything here appears more or less in order," he drawled. His eyes never left the papers, and he twisted the pen in between his fingers as he finished reading. "If you have anything else to show me, though, I do hope it's in better condition than these papers."

As for Cannon, the small dog continued to evade Edgeworth's notice. As a result, he did not glower at Gumshoe for having a pet, and merely gave a mental critique of the man's organizational skills as he gave his signature to the paperwork.

"Have a good day, sir, Mr. Gumshoe." Ffamran saluted Edgeworth and nodded to Gumshoe and considered himself dismissed. He decided to head back out to the deck where he had been, hopefully to find something else more interesting to do.

Gumshoe waited patiently as Edgeworth took and examined his paper work, giving Ffamran one of those wide grins as he left, mouthing the words 'Thanks, Pal!', before refocusing his attention on the man behind the desk.

This was becoming far too normal for him to be in this position..and atleast Edgeworth hadn't started making snide comments about his apparent lack of ability to hold a ship. Not that it was always his fault...but it was still hard to explain that. And alot of it was his fault, but nothing that was too incredibly major. After all, he hadn't been discharged, yet. When Edgeworth finally spoke, he nodded, never leaving the at-ease position as he spoke. "Sorry, Sir. It'll never happen again." Oh, it would....Gumshoe just couldn't help it. He couldn't afford a paper tube, thus everything had to be stored in his rucksack or loose in his quarters. But it wouldn't be intentional, and he really would try his best. As the papers were signed, he hefted up the patched and battered rucksack back up onto his shoulder.

"Are quarters to be assigned, or shall I reside in the barricks?" A helmsmen in the barricks was almost laughable....but it had happened more often then he cared to count at this point.

The papers were arranged as neatly as possible, and handed back to Gumshoe. "Your quarters will be assigned below deck, stern side. They're small, but serviceable." Really, this was quite generous, considering the man's reputation for mediocrity. At least he wasn't being stuffed in the barracks.

Edgeworth cleared his throat and rose from his seat. "Welcome aboard, Sub Lieutenant Gumshoe. I certainly hope that-" The first mate stopped mid sentence, as he noticed the small, furry thing that lurked behind the helmsman. He peered at it, and said, "Gumshoe. Care to explain yourself?"

To be honest, Gumshoe was elated to learn that he'd been assigned a private room, his grin wide and telling on his face. Barricks would have been survivable, but...well, who was really stupid enough to -want- the barricks? It was small, cramped, and usually smelly...and he'd be stuck with a bottem bunk since no one in their right mind would want to sleep in a shoddy bunk under someone who was as large as himself. So yes, the room was a happy thing.

Watching Edgeworth get to his feet, the man straightened up to give his last salute before being dismissed...only to blink at the sudden derailment of the younger man's train of words. Care to explain..? Blinking, he twisted to see what was the matter..and saw Cannon, sitting peacefully tucked between him and the door. "Oh! This is Cannon." He bent and picked the large puppy up by the scruff, tucking it against his chest so that Edgeworth could get a good look at the well kept coat and fine runner bones. "He's a dang fine ratter, and a more loyal watch I've never seen. Pretty well bred, too, judging from his shape....I wouldn't know though. Found him, in the markets one day. He won't be a bother...he eats from my rations and is perfectly well behaved." He was babbling....but suddenly, he was nervous..

Edgeworth ignored Gumshoe's mild panic attack, and looked over the dog. The thing appeared to be healthy enough; its fur had a nice, clean sheen to it, its build was thin without being scrawny, and there were no signs of sickliness or weakness that he could see. As for temperament, it passed that test as well. If the past minute or two was any indication, Cannon was calm, well behaved, and mellow, without being listless, languid, or unalert.

While Edgeworth wasn't sure how much von Karma would approve, the dog did have the potential to be useful. Vermin were a problem even on the most well kept ships, and as long as Ryohei was in the kitchen, it could only get worse. Edgeworth nodded, and said, "Very well. The dog will be allowed on board with you, as long as you keep an eye on it, and as long as it remains useful."

...besides, Cannon already looked more agreeable than some of the humans aboard the ship. If nothing else, at least dogs were dependable.

For his own benifit, Cannon simply curled into his owner's chest, tucking that graceful head in under the day old scruff that had formed on the Sub-Lieutenant's chin. It looked to be some kind of sheparding or maybe herding dog, and it's intelligent brown eyes were cool as they watched Edgeworth's examination of him. Once the test was past, however, he was put back down, and he gave a couple of tailwags up at the man in the strange uniform before sitting once more.

Gumshoe couldn't keep the grin off his face. Nodding, he gave his parting salute, taking the man's words and demenor as his dismissal. Cannon gave one last look at the man before trotting after.

Now to find that room....
