Phoenix had just been heading back to the ship after a day of exploring, when he heard a voice.

Huh? Where's that voice coming from....? he wondered, looking around for its source. All he saw was a tiny cat, eating something on the ground.

......wait a moment. He'd heard about a talking cat that Major Hijikata had all but adopted. Phoenix stared. No, it couldn't be....!

If Chi noticed Phoenix, she made no show of it. Instead she stood up, grabbing the biggest, bestest hunk of the meat, and starting to trot off. There was a bounce in her step and a song in her heart... proven by the humming she was doing around the meat. If one listened closely one could tell it was a garbled and off-tune rendition of the "Steel Samurai" theme.

....he'd definitely heard her humming. Normal cats didn't make sounds like that. What was she doing out here?

"H-hey!" Phoenix called out. "Hello? Uh....here, kitty kitty!" he tried. He felt distinctly foolish.

Her ears shot up, and Chi turned, her nose twitching. She knew that smell! He was from the Victoria!... though she couldn't for the life of her remember his name.

"Hi!" She called back after shallowing her meat.

Wel, at least the cat was talking back. That made Phoenix feel a little less silly.

But not much.

"Hey there," he greeted, crouching down to get a closer look at her. "Are you...Chi?" he asked. Phoenix had never seen the cat, but he'd seen some of the posts on the network, and heard from other (highly amused) crewmen about the talking cat that Major Hijikata had been charged with.

"Chi is Chi!" She squeaked, stretching her neck out to rub her head against his hands. Tiny little purrs rumbled up from her chest, and soon she was rubbing all up against his legs too.

Well, wasn’t she cute? Phoenix liked animals well enough, as long as they belonged to someone else. A fond smile was on his face as he petted her, crouched down on his ankles to reach her more easily. “Aren’t you friendly,” he murmured, more to himself than the cat, in the same way that you would talk to a normal animal, incapable of answering back. He wondered if he could pick her up, or if that would be too forward. She was a talking cat, after all, and Phoenix knew that he would find being picked up horribly unpleasant.. ..

.. ..was he thinking too hard about this?
