Just a few moments ago, Hijikata Toshirou had been on his desk, doing his work, trying to ignore the rest of the ship and the existence of the world in favour of being in his own corner and waiting for his injuries to get better--

--and then of course, Sogou and his fucking large gun decided to make their entrance into this room.

The boatswain looked up from over his desk, having gone underneath it when the explosion happened (which was hard, considering one of his arm was currently binded). He looked right at the brat, scowl on his face before the usual shouting started to occur.

"WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING?!"

Sougo wore a sinister grin as he looked down on Hijikata. This was a rare chance, to see him cowering under his desk.

"I was just waking you up, Hijikata-san," he greeted as he hid his bazooka, too amused to see the officer hiding like a little girl.

Mind you, Hijikata was only cowering down there because he had been completely taken by surprise - usually he'd have somewhat sensed the gunner making his move, but this time he was far too distracted by everything else to actually pay attention to his other senses and instincts.

"Its eleven in the morning," the boatswain seethed as he clambered up to sit properly on his chair again after that spectacle. "Of course I'm awake, you little shit."

"But you weren't answering," Sougo uttered, trying to hide his cheeky excited grin behind his lips. He had a little surprise for Hijikata. Other than the little explosion.

"It could've occurred to you that I was busy at the moment," the elder swordsman snapped back irritably with the usual scowl on his face, settling back down onto his chair with a huff as he cast a glance at the papers scattered all over his desk. The blast that Sogou did had certainly messed up the whole place.

Without further ado, Hijikata started to reach out onto his desk, grabbing the papers and went about to keep them together back in their piles.

"But it should have been simple to reply back. You knew it was coming. Your silence was asking for it." He replied in the same snark and bite that the officer hand.

The dust and the mess was still apparent in Hijikata's room. It was hard for Sougo to notice anything other than the man's irritated face.

Great! He's in a good mood.

...well. The man did have to admit that Sogou did have a point there, though he certainly wasn't going to say that aloud anytime soon. So instead he only settled for another wordless grunt and continued to pointedly ignore the brat while keeping his papers in order once more.

Sometimes, the lack of a response was the best response that one could give.

Sougo decided to help the man with his papers as the dust around them begin to settle. It was in kind at most. Sougo was not that cruel after all. Or so he'd like to show. More so, he himself was feeling great. He did have something he was sure Hijikata would like.

But a brush of hands and an awkward bandage got Sougo to take the man by the hand, pulling his sleeve up to see more bandages line his hand.

His face scowled at the man and all that playfulness was gone.

"Who did this to you?"

Hijikata yelped in pain, wincing visibly when Sogou suddenly grabbed him by the hand (fuck his fracture hadn't healed yet damnit--) and only gritting his teeth at the inevitable question that came from the gunner. There was a pause as the elder samurai took in a breath to calm himself down and control the pain shooting up his arm before he yanked his limb away from the other.

"None of your business," came the response as the dark-haired man turned back to his paperwork, as cold and uncaring as ever.

Hijikata's response only made Sougo worry more. This wasn't a small injury but an outright attack on Hijikata. The man would contain a flinch when he could. But to let his body react naturally meant this injury was a humbling experience to him. Had the officer had less of heart towards the man, he would have done this and more to him.

And it annoyed him that it wasn't him that put the man down to shame, and his fingers clenched tighter at that very thought.

"It is my damn business to see you're alive." He hissed as he let go of the man's arm. "We made a promise to them to live her legacy. Don't you dare waste your life on such meaningless fights."

He felt his fate heat up in anger yet with the man injured, he regretted deeply that he could not even punch him in the face.

"Its none of your business what I do in my own time," the boatswain responded neutrally, the irritation and annoyance forced to the side for the moment. He focused on arranging his paperwork, cursing himself mentally for not having lit up a cigarette earlier - some damned nicotine was going to work for him here.

These past few days had been nothing but annoyances, annoyances and more annoyances. Just why couldn't he have some peace and quiet for once?

"It's my fucking business when you're on the brink of death." He took the man by the collar and glared at him, eyes burning in anger for the reckless abandon the officer had brought unto himself.

"How the fuck am I to explain to Kondou-san had you not make it out alive!?" Another pained tone and another set of clenched fingers. Had Kondou not cared enough for both of them, Sougo would have ended this officer's life a long time ago. But he hoped his words reminded Hijikata why they're both here in the last place either one of them wanted to be.

Kondou and his sister brought them here. And it was their duty to protect all the people of Reial.

Had it been anyone else, lesser men would have most likely flinched under the burning glare of the younger swordsman. However, Hijikata was no ordinary person - his old name of 'Demon of Solare' wasn't just for show after all. God knew how many times he had been forced to face death over and over again until it had nearly become a common occurrence for him. In the face of even the most fearsome of things, he wouldn't even so much as flinch.

As such, the boatswain was only silent and allowed the other to shout out what he wanted to shout before raising his good hand and pried himself away from the gunner.

"Something as pathetic as this won't kill me," the dark-haired man went as he settled back down into his seat, smoke still trailing out from the cigarette that had still somehow managed to remain on his lips despite everything. "I won't die so easily, even if I wanted to."

After all, what was the point of trying to kill someone who was already long dead?

"Only someone as pathetic like you would get beaten like this." He smirked as he plopped right beside the officer, pouting away his disappointment.

"Tch. And I thought you had pride. You're probably out of it since someone must have been barking on your stupidity." Sougo would never admit that he had been observing. Hijikata could only be bother by a few small things and it seemed that this time, the man was getting riled up a little to much. All to his disadvantage.

The boatswain only scowled at that, hissing out a cloud of smoke from the cigarette that had magically appeared on his lips due to a certain mun's fail that was on his lips as always while he made it a point to glance away from the gunner in annoyance.

"Don't you have other things to do?" he asked while pointedly focusing on arranging his papers, even though he knew what the answer was probably going to be. He just asked anyway, simply out of habit.

And it's when he's quiet that Sougo knew that something was up. It was more apparent when the officer turned the conversation right back to him. It was as though Hijikata was starting retreat behind his mysterious cloud of smoke.

His eyes narrowed at the question, smirking before opening his mouth to rub more salt on the man's wounds.

"Don't I have the right to know, as your brother in arms, to know why the fuck you're screwing up?" If he didn't have a distaste for cigarettes, he probably would have enjoyed one right now. "If Kondou saw you now, he would be up at arms trying to figure who did this to you behind your back. I don't know who are disturbing your shit, but if you can't even keep your promise to him or to her, then I will certainly end your life here."

He didn't even bother to look at Hijikata. Right now, he's too angry to even notice the fallen man.
