If there was one thing Hughes had failed to learn in the army, it was waking up at the crack of dawn already alert and ready for the day. While he could function relatively well (i.e., walk up the stairs without tripping), it usually took another hour for him to be completely coherent.
Things needed to change if he was to stay in the Way, though, because he was a security kind of guy and he felt the need to check if any intruders had come in the morning. An apartment was one thing, but a whole ship was just asking for trouble for a groggy mind.
First thing first: Coffee in the kitchen. He staggered into the kitchen, sank his head onto the counter, and waited for the coffee to magically appear like usual.
